He's got a point there! CCCP covers pretty much everything in terms of codecs. I use it for every windows installation.

For the resolution issue, its likely your xorg.conf is misconfigured (you don't need to know what that is). There is a configuration tool (I think - not at my main PC) in System>administration(maybe system again?)>graphicsomething. Otherwise someone else can help you, or you can ask for help at the ubuntu forums in the absolute beginners section (its a common problem).

For the sound you need open the volume management (similar interface to the windows volume management) and select which volume control is affected by your keyboard button thingy (words escape me). You get to it by either right clicking the sound icon in the system in the system tray and selecting preferences, or finding it through the menus System>preferences>sound. I had to do this myself as by default it had the wrong volume thingy that only controlled my front headphone jacks. Also expect for me to be completely about where these options are, as I'm not at my main PC right now and I'm doing this from memory.

For the other sound thing you are having problem with, give this a shot:

1. Close all programs that use sound.
2. Open a terminal (application>accessories) and type:

Code: Select all

killall pulseaudio
3. Bask in the glory that is ALSA!!!

This won't do any permanent damage, and everything will go back to normal the next time you restart.

The reason for this is the new sound server for 8.04, pulse audio, (you don't really need to know what any of this is) is freaking annoying. From what I can tell, and someone please correct me, the ubuntu devs wanted to rush out pulse audio for the 8.04 LTS release so they didn't have to support the old sound server for the next three years. Its seems to not be fully compatible yet with other stuff like OSS and openal. As a result you have problems where sometimes you can only have one multimedia program running at one time, otherwise only one can use sound.

OSS is a deprecated piece of shit. Anyone who's used Teamspeak for Linux will know what I'm talking about. It's too bad that Pulseaudio isn't as mature as it should be yet. They should've set 8.04 as a regular release, and the following release as the LTS.

Forb, I believe all of the games you mentioned work fairly well on WINE. Photoshop CS2 works basically perfectly, as it's on the Platinum top10 list at the AppDB. Guild Wars is actually #1 on the Platinum top10, followed by Photoshop, so they're basically guaranteed to run perfect, out of the box. COD4 is on the Gold top10, along with Steam, so those should work perfectly as well, but you'll need to make changes to your base Wine install to get them working.

YEah linux is like "type this code and press enter" to make things work in it. its like learning to program.

windows is more like "just use it, but dont download shit and execute programs which have name like getfreeporn.exe" and of course everyone is enough smart, so theres no problem.... just use it! 8)

and reinstall it 4 times in year because of security holes in programs

but yeah, life isnt perfect either. sometimes you may get ill when someone spits on you, etc. or gets aids from whores and stuff like that. IMO life is worser than windows, so where this hate on windows, we should hate life! LIFE SUCKS!

Everything is working fine, but the drivers ubuntu complains about (enabled, in use) don't allow me to raise screen res above 1280x1024 @50hz which is killing my eyes. If I use the ubuntu default drivers the I can use all the functionallity of my vid card, but unless I'm mistaken I need actual nvidia drivers to run 3d stuffage.

2nd, sound. My sound card works (I have 2 of them in the machine) and in preferences I originally selected the advanced linux sound system or whatever it's called, but I noticed that while ubuntu catches my volume thingy on my keyboard and responds accordingly, it doesn't actually change the volume. Also umm certain programs don't play sound (While others will) depending on what I have selected as the device. I'm fairly confident that it's my own fault, but I'm not sure what to do about it.
video:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install envy-ng
then run it.

sound:
go to system -> preferences -> sound
select the default mixer tracks you want the volume knob to adjust (choose device and select items from the list)

You can do this via the GUI if you wanted to, its just quicker and easier this way, and its easier for giving instruction than trying to describe the GUI to the user. To do it in the GUI go to System>administration>system monitor> find and kill all pulse audio processes, just as you would in windows. Its actually more work to navigate the GUI than it is to type in two phrases. Anyway, why are you trolling?

Dude, give it a shot, you really don't have anything to lose. Additionally, it's a lot of fun to tinker around in it. I have it on another 320gb drive so it's not a big deal to boot back into vista if I need to.

If nothing else, like I said, it's a hell of a lot of fun to play around with, and quite honestly it's nice to know how a linux system works. Also, in 2 hours I learned for the most part how the file system is set up and how it works.

Once you know how to do the stuff it's cake simple to install non ubuntu repo stuff. TBh in some ways it reminds me of a mixture of the best of xp and vista without any serious annoyances. One thing I really love, is complete and absolute control over the file system.

TBH it's really hard ro explain it, you just kinda have to try it out. Also if you downloaded the install CD you can run it live from your CD drive. It's not as much fun that way, but you can get a really good idea of how stuff works from that. Additionally, did I mention that you can access your windows drives from inside ubuntu? SO you still have access to your files and stuff.

It's fun :-) Also, go into the settings and enable the advanced graphic features for the OS (kinda the same as windows gfx performance settings except these don't lag in the middle of an animation), then try clicking and dragging a window. It's highly entertaining :-)

Linux = epicfail and aids.

Maybe if there were a Linux version that doesn't require you to do crazy shit to do anything... but that would be against the 1337h4x0r nature of Linux.

Yeah, I'll stick with Windows and spend my time actually being useful rather than trying to figure out what's wrong with my "gpdc -rstu llama.jrg.tx -u -v alpaca.tta -mmalskkj" command to copy a file to a flash drive.

You got it all wrong, its "cp /home/user/file /media/disk-1". Anyway, you could just copy and paste by right clicking the file...

For the most part it's just like using windows tbh. Easier in some ways. THe software repo's are extremely nice, kinda like having your own personal nonags.com.

Edit: Let me point out something here. These are the instructions for installing springlobby in ubuntu:

add this to your /etc/apt/sources.list:

#Ubuntu 8.04 "Hardy Heron":
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/spring/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/spring/ubuntu hardy main

* Install:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install spring-lobby-springlobby

* Upgrade

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
/etc/apt/sources.list: << this refers to a file in the filesystem, it is actually a path to the file, so if you open the file browser, go to etc folder, then apt folder, then double click on sources.list It opens up a options looking window and you just copy and paste this into it:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/spring/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/spring/ubuntu hardy main

sudo refers to a command line interface (pretty much the same as clicking start and typing cmd), you just copy and paste:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install spring-lobby-springlobby

into the window and it installs it for you, then any time you want to update or upgrade the program all you do is just open up the terminal and copy/paste in one or both of these:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

It really isn't complicated to do, and the most interesting thing is that updating the program is much much faster than downloading an installer and running it.

I'm sure there is an even more simple way of doing it through the menu's but this is the way I did it. It really isn't complicated. BTW no acid test last night. I was kinda busy and didn't have time for it. Tonight I plan to hit it :-)

And the installation instructions for pretty much any Windows program?
Click "Next"
Click "Next"
Click "Next"
No fishing for files, no copy-pasting of lines of code that may or may not make sense, no mucking around with command line interfaces... more time for productivity.

Right. Guess what? You've got something called a package management system in Linux, which happens to auto-install your application + all dependencies for you, in pretty much one click! And unlike in Windows, uninstallation really does uninstall most programs.

Now im all for linux and think it's sweet etc, but you cant get around that linux is not for everyone (not even ubuntu)
People want their PCs to just work, they dont care about control of the filesystem or some shit
seriously it's above many people to even install programs on windows

In windows you will never have to run the command prompt, that is a very good thing for userfriendlyness
A command prompt is scary as hell to most people, and it does take a while to learn

GUIs take time to learn, too, and installing windows doesn't make any computer "Just Work", quite the contrary - you need to install drivers, office suite, IM software, etc. This just works on most fresh Linux installs.

Exactly why i love Linux, linux starts off with decent drivers that most of the time do just work and work good. Windows you need to install lots of crap to get any pc to work normally.

Once flash is stable with pulse audio (flash 10 FTW) then i will use my ubuntu partition a lot more.

bullshit, my windows XP installation was way easier and at the end it works perfectly. my first winXP installation even found all my drivers for me, i didnt even need to put any CD in for drivers for my devices.

i had to install ubuntu twice to get it working. first time of install my screen didnt work properly (like 640x480 resolution with 60hz and unable to change it). plus the installation was full of bugs (like some buttons didnt work etc) and errors (in both of installation times).

when i finally got the ubuntu shit working, it loaded fucking long, i saw graphical flaws everywhere, like when i moved window, it leaved traces which were updated slower than window was moving. etc laggy shit. plus i made it crash within the first 10minutes of use! and after rebooting, i made it crash again. and when i finally closed that piece of crap, it took like 1 minute.
+ i didnt get my other HD working, which used SATA connection. then some nerds gave me some code to type to command line or something, but it didnt work.

+ when i tried to install program, i was like "WTF wheres the setup.exe" then (after laughs) someone said about some thing which can download and install them for me by typing the program name and finding it, But it didnt find any programs i needed, then i told that to those nerds and they were like "oh? you dont need that program, use this instead" so... i couldnt install anything i wanted (this made me ragequit ubuntu at the first place). + what if i dont have internet? no way to install programs then huh.

and because of ubuntu, i had to reinstall windowsXP !!! it fucked up my harddrive. that really pissed me off. i aint touching that shit again.

im happy with my windows XP. this barely crashes ever, like only when my gfx card overheats or something like that.
