Almost makes me want to convert one of the full elven songs into a Spring theme.
Morgoth is elvish for something like bain of the world, meant as a horrible name to ward off.
Having read the silmarillion I shall explain. Morgoth was originally named melkor. Before illuvatar created the earth, the ainur sang in the halls of endless time. But melkor one of the greatest of them, wandered itnot he void and upon his return he tried to hijack the chorus for his own song. Then illuvatar created earth and bound its fate to the music. Those ainur who sang that came to the earth where named the valar and the maiar, the maiar beign the greatest in power (maiar being those such as saruman, the great balrog of moria, gandalf, sauron etc). The valar created the world in wait for the first born (elves). But melkor destoryed mountains, upheaved the seas, and for a lonG timE he undid everything they had done. Eventually having smashed apart the world so much, the elves and mankind and dwarves came and melkor set himself up in beleriand, where deep beneath the mountains he created dragons and turned maiar followers to balrogs. His main general being called gauthaur, a great sorcerer and shape shifter. When the ar fo the jewels arrived and beleriand was destroyed and melkor sentenced to the void forever, gauthaur went south to the elves, as anattar lord of gifts. There he forged the great rings, but unbeknownst to the elves he forged the one ring, then he went south to mordor and conquered vast swathes of land.....

By the way, Morgoth Balugir is the name Feanor gave to Melkor after he destroyed the trees and killed Finwe, his father. Morgoth Balugir translates to Dark Enemy of the World, and his true name of Melkor was never used by elves after that event.

Tolkien wrote lots of books in the LotR world. One of them was the Silmarillion. It explains lots of stuff about to the beginings of Middle Earth, and possibly some of what happened after LotR. Mabey thats in another book. But long story short, Morgoth is a big evil dude that hired Sauron as his First General(?) in his army, and tries to kill everything.
