Re: Ubuntu is FUCKING AWESOME
Well I'mma give it a shot. What it really depends on are this set of criteria.
Can I use wings (WELL)
Photoshop (Completely non-negotiable)
Guildwars (From what I understand it runs pretty well)
COD4
GRID
BF2142 (saw someone who states that it works well with wine)
Spring (and all tools necessary to work on evolution)
Unfortunately I have accomplished nothing tonight. My plan was set up and make sure that everything was hunky dory on my cloned drives. Everything was fine, the MBR was fubared, but I had expected that. Easilly fixed with bootrec. What I didn't expect was... Activation. Apparently my already activated copy is no longer activated on the clone drive essentially making the entire thing useless.
I'm really pissed off about this too because anyone IN THEIR FUCKING RIGHT MIND SHOULD FUCKING UNDERSTAND THAT A USER JUST MIGHT HAPPEN TO WANT TO SWITCH THE OS OVER THE A MASSIVE HD IN THE SAME SYSTEM! Jesus fucking christ. How can an OS that is so rock solid have such a massive flaw? Worst part is that at that point I couldn't even crack it (regardless of the fact that I have a legal key). I had 2 choices, command line and safemode... Command line won't allow me to do much sadly, and safe mode doesn't allow shit through, so I'm hosed on that idea. The bad part is the fact that my secondary drive is a sata which has lower priority than my original IDE secondary making the drive letters screw up. Normally this wouldn't cause a problem, but the original OS drive was only 80gb which isn't so cool, hence wanting to stick in on a 500 gb drive.
Jesus fucking christ, arugh. "Hey guys, I have a great idea! You know how this OS is pretty much the best one we've put out in 20 years? Well lets fuck it up so bad that the only thing someone can do is reinstall if they change fundamental hardware! Fuckin sweet amirite???!"
Also, I assume I'm not lucky enough for wine to have dx10 support am I? Cause dx10 doubled my fps.

Re: Ubuntu is FUCKING AWESOME
Wings3d I assume? Wings3d is an open-source application that works in Linux natively. You can install it with Ubuntu's package manager.Forboding Angel wrote:Well I'mma give it a shot. What it really depends on are this set of criteria.

Photoshop is supposed to have good wine compatibility.
No idea about Guildwars
No idea about COD4
Dunno what GRID is
No idea how well BF works
Spring works perfectly in Linux and most of the devs develop it under Linux. You may run into some problems with the tools, but I don't know.

Re: Ubuntu is FUCKING AWESOME
Well I'm using it now. It's the latest disrto, had about 107 megs worth of updates to install. It said important and reccommended so I assumed they were a good idea. Also my sound is working as far as I can tell... It even caught my multimedia keyboard volume thing which made me quite pleased (I've gotten very used to it).
One thing I don't get... why do people make such a big deal about dual booting? I just used my extra 320 for ubuntu and use the bios f12 menu. Seems more simple to me than trying to get linux to cooperate with windows (or the other way around).
So far the interface is quite simple and obvious to use. Blue, green, and orange are some of my favorite colors, so the default theme makes me go oooo pretty. I;m planning on hitting the repo pretty hard here in a minute. So far I have nothing but good things to say. I am sad that that attitude will probably change when I get to screwing around with wine, but hopefully it's easy enough to use that I don't have any trouble.

Re: Ubuntu is FUCKING AWESOME
Umm help :-/
I'm trying to install springlobby which looks to be fairly simple following the ubuntu instructions on springlobby.info
so I open terminal and put in: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/spring/ubuntu hardy main
and bash pretty much says "lolwut?". I'm guessing that that isn't the correct terminal, but I really dunno where any other command line is. Halp?
Edit: O I C, in the filesystem which I assume adds it to the programs list. Ok that's easy enough, but when I try to append it to the file I don't have the necessary permissions to save the file, which tells me that I'm doin it rong.
Edit2: Heh, double click, easy enough. Ok I added it to sources and once I did had a message saying that they were out of date and that I needed to reload which is all fine and good. Seems like everything happened ok, but I don't see springlobby in the add/remove programs thingy. I copy pasted verbatim just like the instructions say to do. Am I missing something here?
Edit3: Aha, so sudo happens in the terminal, but now I'm stuck again... Uhh, where the heck is it? It never asked me for a location. Did I install it or just tell it where to find it. Fuck me, I';m kinda confused.
Edit4: HA, after a little searching in File Browser thingy? I found it. It took me a minute to figure out which icon was the program launcher, but I got it and I can join up and everything. Neato. /me is currently quite happy and somewhat impressed that I didn't have any help doing this. It really wasn't hard. I did a lot of educated guessing but it worked out ok.
Edit5: Went ahead and got wine, however I know I'm gonna need some serious help with it, because tbh atm it's clear as mud how to install stuff with it. Maybe I just haven't looked enough, but it would be nice to have some gentle prodding in the right direction.
I really like this so far. I can see why ubuntu fanboi's are so rabid sometimes. This is really really nice. Not that I know anything about anything, but 2 very obvious buttons or icons or something for repo sources and a place to paste install codes would be nice to have from the get go so that there is no question about it.

Re: Ubuntu is FUCKING AWESOME
well im dl'n and i'll install it on my 500gb raid array which only shows up as 250.
Re: Ubuntu is FUCKING AWESOME
using wine is, after initial configuration (winecfg in the terminal), as simple as treating an exe with "Open with..." and choosing/typing wine. Some wine packages actually associate themselves with windows exes so no need to do even that.
Re: Ubuntu is FUCKING AWESOME
You can just double click in nautilus to open in wine. It is automatically associated when Wine is installed.
Re: Ubuntu is FUCKING AWESOME
whats wrong with windows XP btw
Re: Ubuntu is FUCKING AWESOME
Guildwars works almost perfectly under wine btw (I think there was a minor issue with window mode when I last played it, but that was a while ago and wine has improved alot since then). Also you might be able to get help from yokozar with wine and spring, as he's the one who does the official ubuntu wine and the spring/springlobby packages. He hangs out in the #springlobby channel in the lobby. You could also go to the wine IRC channel to get more general help with wine.
Also, a note about dual booting, I don't think you understand what it is. Dual booting is where you select the OS to boot right after you power up, normally with a customized MBR like GRUB. Your setup with pressing f12 is essentially the same thing.

why does the release date matter? it has been updated every yearRelative wrote:Its a seven year old OS, and ubuntu is simply better.TradeMark wrote:whats wrong with windows XP btw
in that matter, linux is like 20 years old :S omfg. (means you should use vista because its like newest new on the market)

Re: Ubuntu is FUCKING AWESOME
Well, I still have a fairly objective viewpoint at the moment. One thing I can say is that for the interface itself it is much faster and cleaner to use. The difference is that every 6 months with ubuntu you get the latest and greatest and can update ubuntu as opposed to compatibility being tossed and having to completely start from scratch again.TradeMark wrote:why does the release date matter? it has been updated every yearRelative wrote:Its a seven year old OS, and ubuntu is simply better.TradeMark wrote:whats wrong with windows XP btw

Additionally from what I can tell the interface doesn't completely do a 180 every time there is a new version. The software repository is really really cool, and tbh installing programs is really really easy (now that I understand how to do it). I haven't had the chance to use Wine yet, but tonight is the acid test with ventrillo and guild wars.
That said I have some issues. First off, video. Everything is working fine, but the drivers ubuntu complains about (enabled, in use) don't allow me to raise screen res above 1280x1024 @50hz which is killing my eyes. If I use the ubuntu default drivers the I can use all the functionallity of my vid card, but unless I'm mistaken I need actual nvidia drivers to run 3d stuffage.
2nd, sound. My sound card works (I have 2 of them in the machine) and in preferences I originally selected the advanced linux sound system or whatever it's called, but I noticed that while ubuntu catches my volume thingy on my keyboard and responds accordingly, it doesn't actually change the volume. Also umm certain programs don't play sound (While others will) depending on what I have selected as the device. I'm fairly confident that it's my own fault, but I'm not sure what to do about it.
BTW ardour looks pretty neat. I'm liking what I see here.
Edit: AHA a great free remote destop solution without having to screw with vnc/dynamic DNS: http://www.nomachine.com/products.php

A professional licence costs over UK £100, Ubuntu is free.TradeMark wrote:whats wrong with windows XP btw
Windows is closed source - you have to rely on MS fixing security errors, or even announcing they exist. Because Ubuntu is open source, security is through security, not through obfuscation.

Re: Ubuntu is FUCKING AWESOME
My point was the fact that most people never need to think about it. They see the little icon in the bottom right of firefox and don't care otherwise.
Pretty much you have to explain why openSSL is good as opposed to the windoze alternative for people to truly understand.

"things that general everyday computer users need" means programs they run themselves, not programs that support the servers they access. (If I'm wrong about this, I'm sorry, but I tried very hard to find any way openssl libraries or code were used by browsers and found nothing.)

1st one, humorous.
2nd one, slightly disturbing. I've already installed all of the updates it's asked for. Do I need to do more? In case it wasn't super obvious, I'm using hardy btw.

http://www.happypenguin.org/I still want to play all my silly little games

As usual another pointless post.yay ubuntu
Ahem.
WINE is not an emulator, look it up. Although your probably on about something else at that point heh. What I mean is... Why in the world would I want to run something through an emulator that has substandard support, when i could run it natively and garner the entire benefits of it's features?
If you are on about VMWARE and the likes the point is you can run both at the same time.
Probs already pointed out but spring has fully working .debs packaged with springlobbyWhy can't other software developers do this? Spring for example. What keeps spring form being packaged like this?

Click the signal bars and a list of networks pops up.In ubuntu in the networking settings I could not find a list of networks.
For adding spring in ubuntu you need to add the repository to your list (open up synaptic and add the repository). Then when you install when updates come you get them easily :)so I open terminal and put in: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/spring/ubuntu hardy main
and bash pretty much says "lolwut?". I'm guessing that that isn't the correct terminal, but I really dunno where any other command line is. Halp?
Linux may be old but distributions like ubuntu make new releases every 6 months or so with updated applications, updated kernel etc.in that matter, linux is like 20 years old :S omfg. (means you should use vista because its like newest new on the market)
To end my post i do love ubuntu, even though i type this from windows i still love linux, but there are a few apps/games i want to run in windows until WINE is truely ready for me.
Also why i love ubuntu -> sound and video codecs are a fricken breeze! It's hell when you install XP.
Ps. ubuntu forums are a great resource for noob questions, they help me no matter what it is, they are real nice forums and helpful members.
Re: Ubuntu is FUCKING AWESOME
I can help you with that one. Install CCCP and you're done.clericvash wrote:Also why i love ubuntu -> sound and video codecs are a fricken breeze! It's hell when you install XP.
