So yeah, reject the NATO application, leave them to eat the consequences of their own actions. The NATO is a defense treaty, not a bail-me-out-when-I-bite-off-more-than-I-can-chew deal.

The US should just send Barak Obama to Russia. He'll talk em out of it  He'll also tell them how they can stop drilling or buying oil because they don't need so much now that they properly inflate their tires.

On an serious note... Could we send brittany, tom cruise, nicole richie (I would say paris hilton here, but her tv ad was funny as hell, so she gets exempted), keanu reeves, harry reid, nancy pulosi and the cookie monster over?

*Note* Half of the people on that list will do if not the whole list.

In most of exUSSR, most of railroads are electrified. That means all trains on them use electric power, no matter passenger or cargo ones (though passenger and freight locomotives are different, ones being faster and others more powerful). I strongly suspect it's the same in the rest of Europe, too. USA is well known for having low railroad electrification however :)

Replace aircraft with zeppeliners, solar powered of course, ships can use sails, railroads electricity and trucks could as well with some work. Return of age of sail and zepelins would be so awesome.

Russia Today, a more-or-less official Russian news source for English-speaking people.
Here's another one (though this one seems to be biased, but not the way Western sources are).

According to the latest news I read, here:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080811/ap_ ... th_ossetia

Russia's just invaded Georgia in the west, widening the war :|

This probably means that the Georgians managed to close or impede that tunnel.

Given that move, which that first article I cited said was the best strategic response available... that means that the Russians were quite ready- you can't launch attacks on that scale without quite a lot of preparation. Among other things, one of the lessons to be learned is that Georgia's strategic intelligence was woefully inadequate.

I suspect this is going to keep going until Georgia has been occupied by the Russians, they seem to show no signs of stopping their forces at this time. Putin's comments indicated that the Russian government has decided that capture of the Georgian political authorities is now a strategic objective of the Russian government- words that will be very hard to back away from.

Looks grim, folks. I suspect that Georgia will be in Russian hands before the end of the month.

@ Forboding Angel

they can pull anything, like the diesel locomotives. If not one is capable alone, take two/three/usw...

The electric ones have equal or even more power per weight as the diesel locomotives.

To the Georgia "situation":

it would be bad for Europe if the Russians take that country, we need the BTC free from Russian controle.

Might have been Abkhazian forces. They drive the same APCs Russians do, wear the same camo and shoot the same weapons, not to mention they aren't bound by Georgia borders. Only they aren't Russian troops. I think we'll know more on this soon enough.
As for the tunnel, here's a map of the first day of that conflict (situation had already changed since):

Blue forces are Georgians, red forces (defence) are South Ossetians, red arrows are the Russians. Take note of Russian's path - they all come from the single road. That is the one that leads to the tunnel.
