The problem is the fact that this stuff is in the Quran, the immutable word of God. The kind of person who follows the rest of it to the letter is going to take this kind of verse seriously as well, and those who don't come out in support of it are more likely to obfuscate and make excuses for it to non-Muslims rather than try to explain to their fellow Muslims that "this sort of stuff should not be permissible today, even if we accept that it should be allowed at any time" (This is probably taking the safe route, as reinterpreting the Quran is likely to get you excommunicated at best. Case in point: the Ahmadiyyas.)
