Why dont we learn chinese and join theirs? Or for that matter, why did we not all learn swedish, so we could all talk to the SYs in their native language?

What are the exact stats for Mandarin Chinese? I know, at least in Hong Kong, Mandarin adaption is high, but not completely universal, probably in the area of 80% with some understanding and 40% with fluency. There are a plethora of other small dialects in china as well, although I'd really only be able to guess what percentage of the population represents them. I'm fairly sure Mandarin is only spoken within china as well, there is very very little internationalization of the language.

No, Mandarin is the 'standard' spoken language. There are many, many regional dialects in China such as hokkien, teochew, hakka etc. are commonly used among their respective communities, but most of those are not taught formally (except Cantonese).

Mandarin is the 'official' Chinese language, and is used in all Chinese-language education regardless of location, and Chinese in general can converse both in Mandarin and the dialect of the community they come from.

Right. I'd almost say there's a direct correlation between how educated someone is, and how good their mandarin is.

They vary very greatly, in terms of oral pronounciation, and even within a region, there are sub-dialects. All also have their own slang, and sentence structures etc. varies across dialects.
So in essence, Mandarin is the 'lingua franca' among the diverse Chinese communities.
And even if some communities do not have a good grasp of Mandarin, the written characters are common to both.

Enough to make linguists debate about which are dialects of Mandarin and which are separate languages.

The entire issue is of course political in China just as language/dialect/uneducated rabble-speak is a political issue in many countries, such as Italy.

This page says that Simplified Chinese is an available Springlobby language and that it's maintained by chaosch.
