Looking swish dude!

Re: Updated site layout ready?
If we're honest the news is a mini blog and we should treat it as such.
- Merge developer and community news and just flag them as either one like a tag or category
- There needs to be RSS, but we need all our fancy pictures and text formatting to still remain intact
- Currently there's very little styling of any kind, perhaps one of those little block things with the date like the calendar things etc?
- Perhaps instead of showing the whole of a news post just an excerpt and then a link to view it in a single page or on the forums, this would work much better with the RSS stuff.
- I would set up a forum for 'contributed news' at which point a moderator or appointed forum member could move the thread into 'actual news' at which point it would go live on the front page. Tim blodjik and swiftspear apparently had great success setting this up on tims test site.

Re: Updated site layout ready?
That was one of my original intents. I will say that it would be nice if you stated from which site the headlines were grabbed with a link. For example, if a post was made on the IW site or gundam's site or springinfo, or evolution's site, it would be nice for the user to be able to visit that site based upon the newpost.Fnordia wrote: Perhaps it could be done as a forum based one, or maybe we could just fetch headlines from sites like springinfo..
On an unrelated note. The games page in particular looks really really bad. You need flashy nice looking screenshots and some wizbang in there. Atm the page is extremely boring.
Doesn't count as a "Major Issue" but it is a valid concern. AF's posts on tables vs div containers+css pretty much mirror my own thoughts so I didn't say anything. Div containers + css are much easier to work with and are a lot more flexible.
Looks nice.
Edit: Ungh, remove the TA banners, They look horrible. 3do models up close do not look nice at all. Not to mention that none of those screenshots are worthy of the stuff we have available in 76b1. Additionally, we have more than 2 spring videos available, might wanna start rotating them.
Re: Updated site layout ready?
Please use this logo type instead.
That blue stroke on on the current one clashes too much.
And the all caps is completely unbalanced, doesn't have any class.

Re: Updated site layout ready?
Neuralize, those colors are quite ugly.
We have an official logo, and we are using it. The "Logo" is not just the little gear, it is the entire thing. DL the svn spring installers for a working example.
The word spring comes off as a game. Spring is an engine, not a game, people are going to have to get used to referring to it as such at some point. Now is as good a time as any.
Blue and orange do not clash, in fact, it is a common commercial color scheme. That's like saying that pure yellow and white clash. They don't clash, they blend... Badly. Orange and blue blend quite nicely and are much more professional looking than a simple red-ish gradient.
All caps for a product label is common, and in this case, professional looking.

Man, why does every single little logo discussion have to be like pulling teeth. Considering how ad-hoc this community is, it doesn't have to be about how official it is, all it has to do is look good.
Just because we have a terribly designed "OFFICIAL" package doesn't mean shit. I mean hell, god bless AF's level of effort and community involvement, but lets not kid ourselves here, when something looks bad, it looks bad.
We can easily call on roflcopter to add "Engine" in lower case with the same gradient style. It's one word.
Yes, you're right about blue and orange being pretty sweet together, but not TEAL, BLUE, AND ORANGE. Looks really ugly. Roflcopter, get your stuff in a nice vector package and get it to fnord, and add Engine to it. Thx.

You need to get your eyes checked. The only thing in that image that even remotely close to teal is medium teal blue, which is still a stretch. (why am I having pink colored flea flashbacks? Oh yeah...)
It's like pulling teeth because you're wrong, and no matter how hard you try, you will still in the end be wrong. They're called "perspectives", you're gonna have to get used to them.
No, what was bad was trying to get a flower for the official logo. That would be great if this project were targeting young children. Not so great for adults. You may just want everyone to take things less seriously etc etc, but "let's be honest", for many of us this is a serious project and we have tons and tons of man hours sunk into it. Unless I am mistaken, you are the one who originally came up with the sun, is that correct? No offense, but just because you came up with the original idea doesn't give you exclusive rights as to what goes and what doesn't. "Community Effort" remember?
It's just a font... There is no reason why roflcopter would be needed specifically for it. That said, fnordia has the original psd, as does smoth and a few others. Roflcopters logo is very bland and tbh from my point of view, in comparison it's totally fugly.
That said, there is a reason for enforcing standards and this is one of those reasons. If you don't like it, you should probably talk to tobi.

Re: Updated site layout ready?
Foreboding there is a very well thought out reasoning and goal behind neuralizes post that has echoes across the past few years.
You see every single logo thread is usually involing either Neuralize and a handful of people worshipping a piece of artwork hes amde whcih just happens to be intended as a spring logo, or its a logo thread were neuralize is pushing forward an alternative logo of his own creation or criticizing the main contender in any way he can think of.
While this seems a fairly large jump and assumption, I assure you, a quick look at neuralizes conduct in logo threads will quickly show that this is the case. A prime example being his attempt to use myself as a means to lend 'officialness' to his last effort as a 'community initiative' where neuralize completely ignored everything I said in private and disregarded everything I said in public.
It also happened to be the time I had launched my site design thus giving my own logos a nice launchpad which would have done wonders for neuralizes logos.
Why would neuralize do this? Probably for the same reason I did it, my portfolio. Having the spring logo in a portfolio and that artwork being actively used is a very nice thing to have ^_^ However I did it through continuous streams of artwork.
Just look at Command Engine, Neuralize immediatley proposed a slew of logo ideas.
Neuralize does it by denouncing the competition and getting people to join in. Do people not wonder why my logos were liked by everyone I showed them to yet as soon as they showed on the forums I got criticism from people who usually post neuralize logos every few weeks such as the peewee? Or the one with the sunset? Nice artwork but not logo material.
Now I trust neuralize that you really do know what colour teal is, and you do not have any intention of keeping that roflcopter version of my logo in the banner.
If we put that version up and ditch my logo then in a months time you'll come along with a new logo, and lets be honest, its not that hard to beat the red roflcopter logo, the colours all wrong and the text doesnt look very proffesional, and it doesn't fit with the colour scheme of what fnordia and roflcopter have made, which is where roflcopters true skill and effort has been applied.
This to be honest is surprising. Neuralize having graphics design experience should have sided with me, if he was confident that my artwork was inferior then he shouldnt have a problem generating better art, and it was obvious regardless of roflcopters logo consistency was too important. After all neuralize did start his 'community effort' citing lack fo consistency as the main flaw.
Now I take it that there'll be a handful of posts by neuralize saying either 'quote demur quote demur quote demur' or a 'Im not even going to justify that with a response'. I see this post will probably be construed as an attack even though it is not (yet again criticism != insult). But I do admit that Ill be honest, helping the spring community through better logos is not my sole aim in doing this and I wont pretend it is (but neuralize will).

Re: Updated site layout ready?
Thankyou for proving my point neuralize.
Please note: The average colour of neuralizes logo is brighter than the average colour of mine with the highlights bumped from 15% opacity back up to 29%

you guys are just arguing to keep attention away from my logo, cause you know it blows yours out of the water!

Re: Updated site layout ready?
why the hate if it's a community website?
Re: Updated site layout ready?
Its spring engine because thats what ti is 'the spring game engine' only that's a little too longwinded and just 'spring' doesn't say very much about what spring actually is. "Spring" alone sorta implies that we're a charity or something or a climate research global warming organisation.
Re: Updated site layout ready?
Machiosabre, please post in png, so I can take you super seriously.
Re: Updated site layout ready?
Thanks for putting up the info, Fnordia. I'll get working on some banners tonight.
As for the rest of it... meh... enough argument, people. We finally have something that looks good and seems to work. The details about how to display the News, etc., can evolve separate of the issue of getting content built now. Let's get going.
And the real questions unresolved by this, besides News display, are whether the Forum database can be ported, or whether that link will redirect here, and meaningful discussions about how / whether to port existing Wiki articles to AF's DocuWiki, which looks wonderfully feature-rich and could probably be a good thing to use going forward. That's an area we have not explored in any real detail, other than some initial statements indicating it was not going to be simple copy-pasta.
That's the iceberg, people, so quit fighting over the tip
