CORE Banisher +1

Post by MR.D »

I'm pretty sure that this is the final Combat vehicle on the list besides the Tremor which I will be finishing next.

I've been wanting to do the Banisher for a while now, it has been plagued with problems for a long time, both script and model errors.

While this unit is a pretty popular assault unit, I will try to do it justice.

The Radar and Jammer vehicles will come after the Tremor and should be very quick for me to do, I just wanted to get this harder stuff out of the way first before wrapping up the final vehicles for LVL-2.

Since this is originally a 3d party model, I went ahead and changed its appearance quite a bit to give it more personality than just being a big blocky looking vehicle.

So far I'm sitting at 1224 triangles on this model.

Mmm, nice body.

But rounded missile housing for the fail??? I mean, first impression was ZOMG JET TURBINE BATMOBIEL!

EDIT: Oh wow, and look at the cockpit like protrusion at the front: if this thing doesn't move faster than a Vamp, it's out of place.

Another non-cavedog. I don't like this design much, but it's not your fault, you've done a fairly nice reimagining of the original.

Why have you chosen to make the cockpit area look the way you've done it? Not that I think it's bad, just interesting to hear why you decided to go for that rather then the blocky original shape.

In terms of the model itself, I'd probably make the missile tubes extend a little behind the vehicle so that it seems a bit more balanced. Not a whole lot, just a little.

I don't really care for the round tubes.

I think we are all used to the blocky look and would want to that way.

I agree with Warlord Zsinj to extend the rear of the missile tubes. I also think that chankier tubes would look better. Finally, I wonder how it would look if you gave the turret a "platform" like the original has (not necessarily the same shape, just a platform of some sort). I like the "recoiless" look you've given to the tubes. Great job overall as always.

Remember to make the missiles as separate models for the projectile.

Btw the bug where the missiles wouldn't reappear in the original was due to "show piece" not working in FireWeapon(); in FireWeapon it creates the default muzzle smoke instead.

Some tweaks.

I can't really extend the rear of the missile pods at all, with the pivot at center, the rear will start to clip into the turret if it I extend it at all, and we all know that the Banisher will go after high flying fighters and bombers quite often.

Instead of extending the rear, I put support cradles on the front to steady the Pods during travel.

After looking at it good and hard for a while, I agree with you guys completely about the shape of the cockpit area and tubes, it is just corny looking, so I went back to blocky and a more conventional cab look for the cockpit.

I still can't get over how much this unit in general looks like the Missile Trucks from DUNE-2, but anyway I hope this is better.

Triangle count is down to 1118.

Please give it the back wings, if its going to clip, then make it curve upward so it would reduce clipping into the model, currently it looks like a bad ass version of the arm juno, which is just blocks to begin with.
It's turret atm is very close to the base of the tank, perhaps you can erect alittle higher then the original to make it look a bit thicker y-axis wise?

most 3rd party tanks are flat, and its cavedogs fault, the y-axis illusion on the ota engine allowed it to be very flat, while looking much taller.

Ok, I'm sorry, but that just looks hideously out of place imo.

the base shape is better the turret is not. I think you got too much curves on it or some thing and yeah hotdog thing...

I don't know. The base is good, but not necessarily an improvement. The turrets don't look good, but I'm not sure what will make them be better.

Draw up a sketch of what looks best to you then Revenge and post it up.

With the turret, would it be better to make an exposed rocket, or sealed in a pod?

Both are nice interpretations, though overall I think I prefer the first, even though the second is more true to the original.

But, as I said in my earlier post, I think this unit suffers from an average initial design. Most of the non-cavedog units show as being clearly 3rd party - on the whole they aren't great, and don't really match the other cavedog units. I think the best one you've done so far was the garpike, but this one is battling.

What I'd really like to see is you make your own design up, with the same rough capabilities as the banisher (tracked unit, two reasonably powerful missiles etc). Noone is attached to the original design, so it's a good opportunity for you to express yourself creatively, and come up with a totally new layout...

I mean, I understand that you want to keep working because there's a mountain of units ahead of you, but it'd be interesting to see what you come up with.

I think the round end makes the tubes look like energy weapons instead of missile launchers. To avoid clipping it might work to remove the outer holders on the turret and just mount the tubes on a central piece with their sides exposed, that gives more of a missile launcher look.

Machio's getting warmer, I think it's really just how round the turrets are. I got a copy of Wings3D and SketchUp last night, and I'll try and play around with them. Doubt I could make anything usable though. :?
