Have we been attacked?

Post by Argh »

The 'site's been down for over 12 hours again.

One time in a year is a minor hiccup at a "three nines" ISP. Stuff happens, after all.

Multiple times over the last few months... looks like a more serious problem, and if this happens during the major release period, which is coming closer every day... well, that'd really hose our credibility as a project, imo. After the UF disaster, we can't afford another disaster like that, imo.

What's up with that, and do we need to mirror this 'site and provide for redirection to another locality to deal with it? I know that mirroring the database for this Forum's probably impractical, but what about the main 'site and Wiki?

Moreover... has anybody explored the possibility that this was done deliberately? There are multiple people out there with the motive to commit an act against this project, and the technical know-how.

At any rate, this is all speculative at this point, but I'm a little worried- this hasn't been a problem until this last few months, and now it's almost every couple of weeks :|

my advice is to mirror the current spring release on your homepage prior to releasing to avoid this issue.

From what I understand a power outage was the culprit this time.

By the way, everyone I know has been having problems with a recent XP security update that conflicts with zonealarm. To fix: turn zonealarm internet security level down to medium or roll back the update.

Just looking at the timing of this, it'd be well worth checking all the server machines if they're physically with someone here.

Looks like it rebooted for some reason..

Guess the problem would not be as bad if the dns actually updated automatically though. The server has been up during most of the downtime lately, but with a new IP. Think I have fixed it now though. Guess we'll see next time!

I'm not a professional ISP though, if you want five nines uptime then the site would simply have to be hosted somewhere else. :)

Jobjol is mirrored on darkstars, and soon will be mirrored on mine, so there is no danger of that going kaput again.

argh, I stand by my statement, have your how to play, install and files on your site. That way if the file servers and/or this site go down you are covered.

Believe me, I am about to put spring on my site as well.

The server is a Linux box.

ZoneAlarm? On a server? Is this one of those nerdy jokes which is not funny?

Nope, it's me not really knowing what a server is or does.

Probably the opposite of nerd.

I will now go play american football and fondle women.

Argh: Fnord had some ISP issues afaik (which isn't much), so I have my doubts on your internet terrorism theory. Besides sefidel isn't the brightest bulb. :P

To mirror the forums you'd have to put the database on a seperate server for seamless transitions (and hope it stays up).

@Crayfish: Don't worry, the word server is pretty ambiguous and overloaded.

You could probably merge databases if there is a tool for that. No idea

WRONG! you both fail, it runs 2.0, the black and white version with no mouse support (and yes, there is a version 2.0, and yes, it manages to suck worse balls than 3.1).
