Re: The website (yes, again)
I had to make a few modifications anyway. I needed a middle image for the content that tiled, and that blue line border wouldn't work anyway. Then there's the transition images at the bottom for the footer.
I should really turn it into a wordpress template

I was thinking one div with the picture and another with a white background for text over it, but starting slightly lower and to more the right.
is wordpress easier than joomla?

the only thing I can find him mention about Photoshop/slicing being bad is when you deploy your entire site (including text) using only images
higher things on his list of bad design:
higher things on his list of bad design:
- illegible text
- too much initial text
- visitors can't read the text because it's too small
- the important content doesn't fit in the first screen
- Access Color isn't happy
- unprofessional-looking logo

Yar, flanders has been around since the mid 90's and is a great tool for double checking things.
It depends on what you are doing with the slicing. If all you are doing is header, side and bottom that's one thing (and isn't really "Slicing"), but if your entire design is based around 15 slices that must fit together perfectly, that is bad news in terms of design. Also, to that end, are you going to conform to w3c standards? Cause if you do, chances are it is going to show up badly in IE.
To that end, it is better to use flash than slices.

a good web designer makes the page look good in IE *and* standards-compliant browsers... it's not too hard...

Forb you are already convinced on your perception of design. I am not going to burden you with further input as you feel you no longer need me. I may have some experience with design and a formal education in the aspects of these things. While I do not know everything I try to offer what I do know. Do not bother replying, I'll not read this thread again.

Both of you took what I said out of context.
What I was saying was that if you had a crapton of slices (like 15, which is damn near insane-not counting linktab slices) it would be better to put the entire thing in a flash presentation. In that many slices it's going to end up being fixed width anyway, so I see little harm in it, and then you can even add flashy pizzaz.
Typically it's decent practice to keep your visitors from having to download over 250kb when visiting your front page. Since the advent of broadband this became more of a suggestion than a rule, but it still applies to some extent because it will affect how fast your webpage renders on that users screen.
So why don't one of you geniuses maek slice, dice, and throw it up? If you aren't going to, then shut up and start adding content to the newspringsite instead of conforming to the standard which you have set involving sitting in your computer chair and whining about everything. You guys waste more time arguing about stupid shit...

Re: The website (yes, again)
Its not that freaking hard to turn a photoshop mockup into valid XHTML and CSS.
Sure, straight-up using the photoshop slice tool and saving for web makes a really bad website, but if you do everything properly it doesn't take that much time.

tbh I think photoshop is best used for mock ups, testing out a design idea so you can see what it looks like on screen. AKA sketching a drawing but using a computer instead.
And never use flash if you can do the same thing with CSS. Making it standards compliant and work in IE isn't that hard if you use conditionals.

gnomre did a pretty good job making the mockup of roflcopter's last design.
Not that I'm volunteering him, I'm just saying that he did it quite easily, so it is certainly possible.
