It is pretty much linux only, but what's wrong with that?
Pasting that link solves questions from newbies regularly, ie concerning installation of map/mods, ota content, etc.
Also i svn usage is not necessary in any of the basic steps.

Well, it is also out of date given Yokozar's packages for Ubuntu and Debian. No need to compile from source anymore, etc.

I say we move all the Linux stuff to an article titled "Linux Stating Guide" and star this article from scratch with .76 which will ship with mods and maps, and will have the Spring archive move.

Take a look at it, the info for debian and ubuntu installation from repositories is in there, it is up to date for 0.75b2.

i agree on the title though

the new installer and archive mover are win-only, are they not?

Just so people are aware, all the relevant lobby rules that apply in #main also apply in #newbies since it's an official client autojoin.

Plx be nice.

Could you make it so that I'm not the founder of the chan any more? I don't feel I'm the best representation of Spring to newbies. ;)

edit: thanks peet

Yes please, I'm not entirely sure that Peet is the ideal representation of Spring towards newbies either. :P

edit: now the channel has no topic any more, I do think it would be cool if there was a link in the topic to this thread. At least until the Wiki FAQ is updated and reduced to a usable form.

edit: Thanks Peet. :)

I offer my services to host newbie games whenever i choose to show up. I'm a pretty reliable host and all around level-headed guy. Few people have complaints with my hosting. And I'll even host BA games seeing as how thats where most ppl start.

BOTA is broken in the current version anyways. And I don't have the time anymore to fix it.

Your description about "allies" is correct, but you have put the term "team" there too.

So now "team" both means ally and team, in your FAQ that is.
Simply switch that wrongfully placed "team" with alliance, or something like that.

Yeah i know, perhaps not the most important thing but it bothers me.

still not fixed, the error is here: "If you are in the same team, each of you controls their own units, but you are allied."

my suggestions is: If you are allied (you have an identical ally number as another player) each of you controls your own units, but you fight against other players/allies together.

Have you installed it yet? To start a new game run the "TAS Battleroom" executable. After that, create a new account and log into the server. Then you'll be in the #newbies channel and people will be able to help you more in real time.

The #newbie channel is not much help. There's 80 people in it and none of them say anything. I had to switch the the main channel before i could even find someone to tell me to stfu and go away

i liked the idea first but whats a newbie channel worth if there are (almost always) only noobs in it and noone who helps them ?

#main has always been a much better source of information for me...

Spring is hard enough for new people the newbies/new/noob channels should be set up for the new players.

And the PM ring needs to be on by default!
I have given up trying to help noobs cuz so many do not notice because they do not get rung.

If I understand correctly TASClient does not have a pm ring when someone is in spring ie. not in another program.

All I see is enter and leave messages. That is, we need a better signal to noise ratio.
