Internet speed vs download limit
In Australia our usp's usually have a download limit (roughly around 12 gigs per month depending on the plan) if you exceed this the internet is capped to speeds of around 26kbs.
I have had a look at some plans and offers and have boiled the choice down to a possible two options
Adsl
1500k with 50 gigs a month for $70
or
8000k with 18 gigs a month for $80
I am leaning towards the 50 gig plan as I would rather quantity over speed..
I am wondering if the 8000k speed would make a difference in internet games, or if I would rape through the 18 gigs.

Re: Internet speed vs download limit
with 1500 and 8000k do you mean kbits or kbytes? go for the 50 gigs if you mean bytes, 8000k speed wouldnt make a real diffrence with 1500k, if you mean bits im not sure but i think i will take the 8000k becaus if you just game you wont use 18 gigs a monthLumpy wrote:In Australia our usp's usually have a download limit (roughly around 12 gigs per month depending on the plan) if you exceed this the internet is capped to speeds of around 26kbs.

Re: Internet speed vs download limit
is your exchange ADSL2+ rated, cause those plans are way better then the ADSL equivalents. ADSL is old technology, even for Australia's backward ISP's, the plans are all pretty big rip-jobs.
The question really comes down to your useage.
Do you download large quantities of media? If so, get the 50 gig lower speed, you'll spend more time at higher speeds.
if you game a little and browse a little, go the higher rate one. There is less chance of you reaching your limit and being capped at 65k (or whatever)

Re: Internet speed vs download limit
I think here you must realize the difference between latency and bandwidth. I would think the 8Mbps and the 1.5Mbps are both the same (they're both ADSL or theyre both fibre or they're both wireless), so their latency will be very similar if not identical. Its latency that matters for gaming.
Think of it this way. If every kilobyte of traffic is represented by a car, do you want a 1000 lane motorway with the cars travelling at a snails speed, or a 2 lane motorway with them travelling at 100mph? Both give the same 'speed' but one has a greater latency (100mph 2 lane e.g. fibre optics) and one relies on bandwidth (1000 lane 0.1 mph e.g. DSL)

Re: Internet speed vs download limit
I have done abit more research..
The company I was planning on using appears to be abit dodgy in regards to speeds / dropouts / customer support.
My area doesnt support adsl 2+
I will go with internode, also most of the servers I play on are Internode so that should help.
the speed would be
1500/256 kbps
not too sure about the latency..
It will be $70 for 25gigs.. for the 1500 / 256
or $84.95 for 25 gigs at the "plus" speeds
I beleive to be 8000kbps.
I would mainly be using the internet for gaming / downloading..
Ie downloading games and playing them..
Also i would like more download limits for browsing etc.. at 12 gigs I have to ration out my internet usage..
Speed in spring doesnt seem to matter at all.. I can play on the capped 26kbs speeds with no worries.. Usually 500/800 ping, but then usually other people in the servers will have similar pings.
Pity about Australias internet..
I get greif from a pal in Japan who claims to download at 8 megs a second and with no download limit.

Ask him how big his house is...
Re: Internet speed vs download limit
erm, I'm on an 8MBps plan with no download caps....
Re: Internet speed vs download limit
Spamming to say,
I am on said 28.8k limit right now.
I'm on Optus Cable, particular plan no longer exists for new customers though.... so nvm
Why no one joins my games?

64mbit? I must move there now!AF wrote:erm, I'm on an 8MBps plan with no download caps....

I'm on a 512/1024Kb/s plan with no caps otherwise <_<
Re: Internet speed vs download limit
This community is the first place where i have heard that you can have some limit on your bandwidth used :D
Thank god i live in europe, i would exceed the 50gigs limit by downloading two movies ;>

Re: Internet speed vs download limit
The problem with Australias internet is that we live in a country similar in size to america, but with most of the population living on near the coast.
The cost of laying down wires and cables keeps us from having unlimited downloads.. though I dont know why having a limit on downloading helps anything.
Also most of the cable internet wiring has been done by Telstra,
In Australia the two big names are Telstra and Optus.
I have heard of people being on non telstra adsl 2+ 24mbs plans and their internet has been slowed to 3 to 8mbs due to telstras
"remote integrated multiplexer"
Wich basically means telstra caps your internet speed because they can.
A part of me thinks that because there is little competition / or was (thankfully we are seeing some good providers out there)
they like it just the way it is..
Bit of a shame that we get screwed with download quotas, maby they think we are all criminals..

1500k with 50 gigs a month for $70 <--
Because I'd burn the 18 gigs in less than a week.

Re: Internet speed vs download limit
I wouldn't pay 15$ for increased speed and no increase in quota. You should be able to use that 25GB with the slower one too.
Then again, I'm not paying practically anything for 100Mb/s TOASnet/FUnet.

That's because you are from nokialand
Re: Internet speed vs download limit
I think the internode one lets me get good pings on their servers with the regular 1500 speed one.
Also gaming on their servers doesnt count towards download quota.
Im thinking of either getting adsl 1 set up on an existing line that has been disconected.
Or i could get "naked" dsl wich would get me adsl 2 speeds..
I would have to get a new telephone line connected to the house though.
It would be about the same price for 25 gigs.. maby $5 more then the regular 1500 speed plan

Re: Internet speed vs download limit
Intermode as in "fast path" as in disabling the checks wether a packet arrived properly?
Re: Internet speed vs download limit
intermode? is that like UDP?
internode is a popular Australian ISP.

Re: Internet speed vs download limit
Uh, it looked like intermode and I had no clue what's it supposed to be so I took a wild guess, obviously.
