Porcing?

Porcing?
Everyone keeps throwing this term around and I'm trying to figure it out.
First of all, am I right to assume it refers to the strategy of playing defensively and building up a huge resource base and income infrastructure and not attacking till very late game.
Second, is it derived from Pork, as in acting like a pig and pronounced "Pork-ing". Or is it Porssing or something else entirely?
Also, why is it concidered undesireable?

Link to cavedog mirror, wicth came up with the term porching.
I think being a ''Porcupine'' is disadvantge, speacky in team games. In ffa, Players may ignore the player that just sit there, and in the end they get a huge army and kills everybody.
Other then that, ''Porching is not a fellony or dirty tatic. The makers of this game made the term and came up with it.
EDIT: weird, it doset direct link... anyway, to reach the section on porching, click Strategies, Advanced and then Overall Strategies.

Yes, and that you only stay in a small area and dont expand.First of all, am I right to assume it refers to the strategy of playing defensively and building up a huge resource base and income infrastructure and not attacking till very late game.

The guide is out-dated, yes. But it has a document about what Porching are, and what you have to do.nah its fairly nooby tbh and things such as area reclaim repeat orders etc have made that guide utterly obslete. spring is a brand new game =D

(tbh? what the hell is that?)
My friend max is the best procer ive ever played. He builds small, compact bases with fusion and rows and rows of defence. I know my 47 krogoths didnt get through (in ota). After his base is satisfactory (which can take hours, everything must be in the right place) he build a massive army and pwns everyone. He is vulnerable to rushes, though. Ill post a screen of his best base when i find it....

My favourite tactic back in old TA days. Get bunches of construction aircraft and jammers to secretly build "Bertha Bases" close to the enemy. Then shell them to hell and back.
Animated 579kb
Usually porcers focus on building defenses, and resources.
Porkers, focus on resources, then units and defenses.
Porkers are faster, but more vulnerable.
Porcers will get your base, someday, finally... zzZZzzZzz
porkers start attacking mid game.
porcers mid late, late game.
How to counter?
Attack early
spy its base
KEEP PUSHING! choose a strategic point, breach it, never stop attacking.

hell probably have buggerall units so mex spam ALL over the map and get some minifusions/mobile fusions then get BBs and Guardians and penetrators to close him off with lots of AA cover THEN start pushing, use scouts a lot as spotters for your BBs take out big targets with brawler swarms and hawk swarms quite easy but if u try this versus a 'swarmer' or 'octipus' you will be right royally screwed. basically if no attacks by 10-15 mins do the above. Colourblind is obscene at porcing!!! i think that MOnGus will be posting/uploading a rep of the sheer porcing force that cb is!

Just got a very good game at desdunes, showing what i call porking (100+metal no storage, top of capacity).
i sure pissed about the loss, and thats why im posting this, bc im a bad loser.

but its a very good example anyhow.
counter? well, i should have attacked/scouted earlier, with more forces later, and stick to one enemy only. :D (so dont get pwd l8r).
if you take a look at cb's base, he is very vulnerable at the beguining, passing the defense line and you have all the base for destroying.
expandig fast and early gave him the advantage later, taking the risk of being vulnerable early game.

My friend (max, whom i mentioned earlier) made a game where he had an inpenitrable (and by inpenetrable, i mean fucking Huge!!! 200+ vulcans with over 200k energy, and in front of the vulcans 200+ BB's, followed by an equal amount of AA and toasters
....it was fucking sick, i cant find the screenshot
....this was all done in the original total annhilation. If you can remember how big the "+makeposter" screenshots were, imagine 3 of those taken up with defence....LENGTH-WISE:
V=vulcan
b=Big Bertha
A=aa
T=toaster
F=fusion

He would let the game run its course as the AI sent large amounts of units at him, only to be incinerated by his D. he would leave the game running while he went to school, racking up kills. We discovered that after 36,000 kills, the kills went back down....then into negatives....down to -36,000...back up to 0....to 36,000....and back into negatives again. So overall he had 300000+ kills after the loop ran a few dozen times. It was wierd holding spacebar and seeing "-12863 kills".....

In the old days of Quake 2, there were the [creepy sounds] campers [/creepy sounds]. People who would spend more time waiting for armour and weapons to spawn up again than fighting.
Then Quake 3 came out. Completely turned out to multiplayer. And Quake 3 is all about bloating yourself up with health and armour. So, virtually all players style also became all about gathering health and armour. The battling became, instead of some politically correct fighting across the open areas, all about controling the features spawning points by whatever means possible.
(so the other guy doesn't shows up in those areas? wait till you find him while having a full 200 Health and 200 Armour to see if he changes his mind about which areas to fight about)
The term camper was completely lost as people realised that the fight must be ... controling the spawn points ... camping.
It's exactly the same with TA and Spring. If a person just porks itself in a confined area, the rest of the map (as well as it's extra metal spots) is open for the other player. After a while, the extra resources will start to make a diference. (if he's porking in the majority of the map, he ain't porking, he captured more map then you and is now defending it)
The only maps where this doesn't work is in maps like Desert Dunes or most metal maps because you won't lack metal because of not controling enough land.

woohoo
this is max, you may of read about my massive porcing base earlier by sheekel. well i could not find that screenshot(i got a new comp
)so i decided to make another one. now this is not nearly as good as the base sheekel was talking about but it well do. ill work more on it and get back to you. the file os too big for image hosting so i zipped it and put it on fileuniverse. just DL and unzip to view. sorry it might be a little hard to tell what things are. i can't get it to zoom in and crop, my paint got deleted.
the big circle is about 150 krogies. the base is outlined by about 70 buzzsaws and some more big berthas followed by 10 doomsday machines. i havnt reached the 36000 limit yet that well be in the next post.

well you simply cannot defend if you expand you base everywhere, your defences get spread thin and one only has to pick them off one by one. If they hide in a corner behind dtwalls hills etc and just hope to hell everyone leaves himalone, if they are left alone they win simple as that, because once they get their fusions going and their 100 construction planes in a few minutes they can have an army of brawlers and their isnt nothing u can do to stop him. Had this happen on mars map, 3 player ffa me and the other guy got bogged down with each other, i put mexxes over most of the map got some defences up after smashing this guys base 100sbrawlers and bombers show up from the guy hiding in the corner.PauloMorfeo wrote:In the old days of Quake 2, there were the [creepy sounds] campers [/creepy sounds]. Much to my chagrin, i was one of those teammates who had no units...
Also i am a turtuler, and from what i have read, that is basicaly a porker with a cooler name! But, more importantly, i would like to state that Spring needs screen shaking. I forgot how cool it is to have the screen shake when a bertha gose off. Why not have that in Spring?
