Need something to buy

Post by Caydr »

Just got a tax refund and a paycheck with 38 hours overtime in a 2-day period. Anyone know something good to buy? Something I must have, and yet don't? Preferably something awesome.

Here's my ideas so far:
-GPS (Since I don't have a car)
-Car (Since I don't have my license)
-License (Since I don't have driver's ed)
-Drivers Ed course (Which is on weekends, which I cannot spare)

So you see, the GPS isn't so good. If you're wondering why I'm 20 and don't have a car, I recently got evaluated and told that my best insurance rate - monthly - was in the vicinity of $500. A month. Plus $300 for a car payment. $100 in gas. NO, I THINK I SHALL HAVE AWESOME BUT ULTIMATELY FUNCTIONLESS GADGETS INSTEAD.

I already have the best cell phone ever (Motorola F3 - $30)

I have TWO DS lites. One was in the middle of being casemodded when I lost hope and bought a new one, then I was bored last week, finished the job, and woo I've got two now, one of which I am tempted to worship for its sheer awesomery.

I have a PSP - though no games, but that's pretty much obvious - and I just dropped $200 on a 16 gigabyte memory card for it. Holy hell you can fit a lot of emulators and tv on there. I've got approximately 83 hours of anime on there in case I'm ever bored. Also a few endurance batteries, and since it's on flash (not UMD) and in a custom player that slows the CPU to 66mhz, I've got something like 50 hours of battery life to a charge. Best thing I ever bought.

I bought an awesome green laser (thank you Hong Kong), then bought another one. So I'd have two. Then I took one to work and engraved "FRIKKEN' LASER" on it. And then I bought a red laser with 160 mW output, verified. It can burn though stuff. I set my shoe on fire earlier this afternoon. Good times. I was in the bathroom at work at the time.

Got a drawing tablet... Got a new monitor... Got 2 750 gb external hard drives... $700 camera I bought for $300...

Was thinking about buying a new laptop, since the one I have isn't very portable. I was thinking, maybe one of those Asus EEE deals... til I heard about the Acer Aspire One, which looks like it will make Asus eat its socks, and is cheaper. And secksier.

Any ideas? I love gadgets. Pretty much anything on dealextreme is the kind of stuff I dream about.

Can you give us more parameters? I mean... can it be large, or does it need to be bread-box sized? There are all kinds of awesome.

If I had the space and the money, I'd buy a kickass quality charcoal / wood grill with a fan assist and heat monitor, and spend the rest of the dough on enough supplies and raw meat to keep me cooking all summer. I have an awesome hibachi, but it's not a giant, feed-an-army cooking device, and requires an expert touch to use it well.

Grills are nice, because just about everybody loves fire-cooked food, women are turned on by men who cook with fire, and ... wait, there have to be more reasons?

PS3?

You could save it to buy games. Otherwise, on to the "other stuff":

The Nabaztag Wifi Bunny - To say you own one, and to freak you out late at night with random mutterings.

Assorted Mini-ITX Projects that you could probably build, or start your own. You could make a nice mini server for multipurpose usage.

I have no idea how you would obtain a Meerkat, but if you have enough money I suppose you could try...

EDIT: You finished your edit when I pressed the Submit button. How the fuck do you afford all these gadgets and shit?

Also, what argh said. Grilling/cooking is a good pursuit and skill to have.

EDDDDIIIITTTt: OH RIGHT. Guns. Firearms. Unless you live in CA, go buy a nice Glock with a silencer, maybe an MP5 or a PS-90 and a silencer if you can afford it. Then, take it to the range and become a good shot. Always a good skill to have imo.

I edited my post after you posted. I'm explaining this to our viewers.

Hmm... I prefer things that are small... if it can fit in a pocket, that is excellent, if it can fit in a backpack that's alright too.

It should:
-Set things on fire
-Look shiny
-Have sharp edges
-Tell time
-Not be an iPod
-Be good equipment to have in everyday geek situations
-Fold in some way and be awesome
-Be something uncommon, something most people don't have

Any or all of the above.

I was thinking about buying a pair of Myvu Crystal glasses, basically 640x480 screens for both eyes that look like something out of star trek. They're... almost... maybe something you could wear in public if it was clear you were NOT trying to be cool in doing so. UNFORTUNATELY THEY CHARGE $80 TO SHIP THEM TO ME. BECAUSE UPS X-TREME ULTIMATE SHIPPING IS MANDATORY. Bastards.

edit: In response to how I afford gadgets and shit, I didn't buy it all at once, and these things are literally the only expense I have. I also pay rent and buy most of the food and pay bills, but that doesn't even come to half my income, and I have no money sense. That last part is probably what's most important. Oh, also, credit cards with 10,000 limits played a part, briefly.

Your criteria seriously dictates a Bond watch, specifically the Omega Seamaster he had in Golden Eye, the one with the laser.

But seriously, what is your budget exactly?

That WOULD be excellent, you're on the right track. Maybe I should offer a reward to the person who comes up with the ultimatest purchasable thing.

Add to list of things it should do:
-Frighten people, that's always a good one.
-Be legal. Or at least legal, enough.
-Preferably be something I can take with me
-Not make people stare

Also, awesome personal safety things are good. Like secret armor vests. Oh man I want secret armor, it adds +3 to any saving roll.

Seen it ages ago, but signal jamming devices are illegal in Canada I think. You ARE on the right track.

Ah yes, more criteria:
-You wouldn't be surprised to see macgyver pull it out of his pocket at just the right moment.
-Be available to Canadian residents, and preferably can be bought in Canada, although preferably OUTSIDE Ontario. HA HA HA.

Excuse me, did you by chance come across that knife by searching google for "awesome gadgets"? Because that's how I found it

I dont know if anyone actually manufactures the things, so you might have a had time getting your hands on one, but I think a coil gun aka gauss gun would be pretty awesome

The only way I know to get one is to buy the components and make it yourself.
