unknown-files.net = wtf?

Re: unknown-files.net = wtf?
There is nobody who is actually making all parts of spring work as effectivly together as possible..no coordinator.
As a result stuff are not polished and important parts get lost and holes are created.
The devs do not do this and they are the only ones that can since they at least have some sort of outhority and are able to make at least some requests from other people who dev peripherals.

The developers have other priorities. Please add more developers to the project to see your requests fulfilled.
Re: unknown-files.net = wtf?
He doesnt have to be a dev.
Just a coordinator that verifies that all are working together and not missing stuff.

Tobi is our coordinator, and occasionally I help. The problem isn't coordination or organization, simply put, the problem is that you can't make people who are working for free do boring or hard work. They will do whatever they feel like doing, or whatever they think they are most suited to, and usually, that's not polish work.
Re: unknown-files.net = wtf?
Then there's the fact that the number of tasks to do greatly outweighs the number of people offering to do them.
If you are referring to outside the engine itself, then you run into another set of issues. For example what your saying assumes that lobby == spring which isn't true or that CA == BA == XTA == ... more content .. == Starwars == spring. They're all totally different projects with their own project leaders, and their own free will. Spring could tell them what to do and they can reply with "Up yours" if they wanted.

i played a bit on afs playground and i think that something like that should be quite easy to maintain and is a usable point to start looking for spring files:

Re: unknown-files.net = wtf?
A: It is unfairly biased towards JJs site and Spring portal.
For one spring portal only has 209 maps despite Darkstars and forebodings file repository containing 800 different maps. Mine and forbs sites are not the only file sites not being represented here.
B: We should not list individual mods or games on the download page. Keep in mind a site structure has already been proposed in this forum in a thread I made and that it is either a filesites responsibility or the content developers responsibility, not our download pages. There's a games page that should showcase games already on the site, if anything it is there that games should be linked from.
C: An enlargened installer icon would be more appropriate than a modified spring icon. The new site needs to be pretty and it needs a hefty dose of graphical imagery.

Best would be to have exactly one URL where players can find ALL spring related stuff. Why do you want people to go to your site if they can get all the maps through jj's mirror system with all the nice map information features?AF wrote:A: It is unfairly biased towards JJs site and Spring portal.

Additionally it is nice to have a listing of all available file hosts if jobjol disappears as UF did.

In order to support JJs system I'd have to either hand him the keys to the kingdom with ftp user+pass that gave him full access to my own file site, my blog, my portfolio site, my image site, all my sql passwords, a number of private sites, and other things other people have asked to put up.
Or I would have to mess about setting JJ up web space under a new ftp account and then try to figure out how to go about setting up usergroups so i can share a folder between two user names.
The whole thing becomes much much more complex should I decide to start developing extra features onto my file site or if I start using a mysql database for anything. There's also the issue of folder structures.
For example all my folders are kept in a particular hierarchy, files cant just be dumped anywhere. File names also matter as the files aren't renamed to their hashes and retain their original file names.
Then there's the vast amount of java script and horrendous usability web design flaws, as well as the closed source nature of the whole site and the code that would be accessing my site.
On top of that there's JJs tarnished reputation. Why should I trust him with access to my web host?

It is relatively simple to give another ftp user access to a folder containing data You can use .htaccess to prevent scripts from running in this folder
You can provide safe PHP wrappers to SQL if he needs to access any file
the torrent system is pretty cool, but it requires the client
methinks we optimally need to have a somewhat uniform, distributed web-based file hosting platform
when you upload a file to one of the sites, sync it to the others
no centralized database or site to lose
Re: unknown-files.net = wtf?
It would be easy to give JJ an ftp space of his own on my site to upload to, but Id want those files to be available in my own file site.
Re: unknown-files.net = wtf?
I dont wantetd to offend the other file hosters, i did not list all sites there because its just wip. in the end there should be listed all mirror sites for spring files.
Also we shouldnt rely on only one filehoster again. what happened to uf can happen to any other site too, so i think the download section should contain at least 2 or 3 mirrors for all important files.
why not list some important files like the installer, 2 or 3 most played mods and f.e. a mappack on this download site? would be much easier for new players to find the right files and get a game running.
keep in mind that i made this site in a few minutes, many things can be improved. its just a concept of what i wished the download section would be.
