Hmm, fair enough. I haven't got round to burning it onto a disc yet as have been busy with exams, but will give it a go and report. How might one go about knowing whether I need to go purchase Home or Professional? I can't quite remember what I had before, and also am not sure whether it would matter if they didn't match. Thanks for the aid.

It doesn't matter, the boot disk for either will work. Professional has better multicore support and better video support though (read multi screen), so if you need those functions...

Alternatively, you could always just use Lunix.

Tried repairing XP and got this lovely message:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

if this is the first time you have seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you may need

if problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. disable bios memory options such as caching or shadowing. if you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press f8 to select advanced set up options, and then select safe mode.

*** STOP: 0x0000000A (0xFE62CD00, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x8082B1D7)

ARGH!

Memtest just seems to do nothing as well, it goes to a blue screen with a load of jazz on, and when I hit c to go to configuration nothing happens, same with esc to exit. Life is fuuuuun.

Any chance you could be a touch more specific there? Drivers for what, where to get them, what to do with them etc?

On a different note, on the memtest for test no.1 it gets to 12% and just stops. So i'm guessing that points to the RAM being a tiny bit on the broken side.

e: Hmm, would I be able to install Linux (and if so I might need a tiny bit of advice on sorting that out) and use that to back up a load of my files before possibly reformating? In general how user friendly is Linux these days? I'm not sure I want to go about learning how to use a new OS but would be open to it depending on quite how much work is involved. Opinions are always welcomed!

IRQL not equal (or whatever you just said) I've seen it before... It was one of three things, I forget which:
1) video card drivers
2) too much overclocking
3) bad memory

My money's on #3. Download Memtest, burn it to a disc, set your computer to start off the disc drive, reboot, let it run overnight.

Also, write down that kind of error message and google it in quotes. Whenever I have a computer problem I find the solution this way - with so many people using computers, inevitably someone else has figured the problem out for me already.
