max rank limit

Post by momfreeek »

Rank limit is great for stopping the noobs from getting on your nerves, but how about a max rank as well? The big games can be pretty hard on a beginner, I've been deliberately sacrificed by my team mates in the first few minutes before.

I hosted a few 'noobish' games and it is easy to get a bunch of them together: They're not keen to host and they're the only ones who read the game description as everyone else has learnt thats not important... hence... its kind of annoying when the gold-star-medals drop in cause its the first game they saw with any players. Asking them to leave brings mixed responses. The pros don't like it when noobs join their rank-limit games (and often they'll insult or bully regardless) but noobs have no way to protect themselves from this behaviour.

If someone set up a 'nooby' autohost that would be ideal. Really there needs to be an obvious rank maximum though.

Seems reasonable to me.

Problem is that rank doesnt reflects skill. In a no TA-based mod stars are very oftenly noobs... :)

I dont see a problem in noobs in high rank games or vice-versa, as long as they come in pairs...

Of course its not always even, but as you say if the noobs come in twos then it works out.. so this shows the ranking is not completely broken.

As for smurfs, if someone wants to abuse the ranking system and screw on some noobs they can do that regardless. Thats not what I'm proposing to solve. If someone with a gold medal joins my 'noobish' game.. thats not smurfing.

The point is there is no usable way to even tell players that its a noob game. In my experience the game description rarely gets read. Getting called a 'noob' cause i don't know how to do something, when the game is called 'noobish' is a bit ridiculous ('I'll read the description next time' he says).

Is the rank-limit worthwhile and useful..? If so why are new players expected to work around what amounts to the same problem? Being eternally polite, trying to remove all the pros to make way for the first time player at the bottom gets a bit tiresome and does not always meet with a polite response.

lol

yeah, any host with a bit of experience should be comfortable with the kickban function (although its not exactly polite.. and I suspect many haven't ever used it). But then experienced players get the rank-limit so they don't need it so much anyway.

back to topic.. what about hte noobs.?

I actually smurf for entirely different reasons. Counter-stacking, counter-smurfing, in-game evaluation, playing with my mates...

Noobs expect the feature so far as to use the existing 'rank-limit' assuming that its a maximum rather than minimum (this is what I assumed the first time I saw it.. but I did read it carefully and realised it was not what I was looking for)

Check out where I've highlighted in pink. First time noobs setting rank limits above their own rank which has the opposite effect to what they expect. If it were a 'suggested rank rather than a limit in either direction this would be a better situation.. currently there is confusion and it can only serve to make a new player's experience more difficult.

Its not like I waited around.. I just happened to see one.. looked a bit more and there were 2.. then a few minutes later another one.

See the game names: 'beginners first steps', 'Noob Game'. They've tried to restrict the game to new players and instead locked new players out.

Sure, they end up playing by themselves.. but I don't think this is what they really wanted when they set the game up.

I admit I may have added to his frustration.. I only wanted to spec and see the chat but I didn't even get the chance to explain myself.

He wasn't afraid to boot experienced players.. he went out of his way to leave a very clear description.. but that just doesn't work. he failed and gave up.

A game with one spare slot will fill very quickly and most likely with an experienced player no matter what you do. There is no way to leave slots open for inexperienced players without constant booting.

Why not make games completly not allow players with lower rank than the minimual rank or with higher rank than the maximum rank instead of just asking them of they are sure they want to join.

I don't think thats the issue here Gota. In fact that system breaks with smurfing anyway (almost invites abuse). I guess a seperate checkbox to do this when you select a rank limit might make some happier.

I'm just interested in making experienced players aware that its a game for noobs. Descriptions don't work.
