Ok, so it's a Mac concept, but there are two particular design elements that I have dreamed of seeing in production, in detailed illustration: the simple hinge, and the protected keys. Seriously, make something in the EEE PC form factor that incorporates these features, plus the latest technologies to enhance battery life (SSD, Intel Atom) and you've got a killer tablet PC good for school and work.

Ridiculously overpriced sex.
Re: A Concept I Would Like to See Applied
Depends. You usually pay at least a small % "sucker tax" (and there are certainly items to avoid that have more of that, and are a waste of money), but the hardware is rock solid, so when you figure the cost of repairs over the lifetime of the compy, it's really not that much more.
Of course it doesn't compare favorably to building your own, but no manufacturer does.

You can now customize a mac desktop with 4 quad core processors, 16 gigs of ram, a couple high end GPUs, 4 hard drives, and 4 superdisk drives, and some other stuff, for about 25k USD. I could only get an alienware up to 12k USD.

Macs aren't any more solid then any trustable PC manufacturer. Somewhat less infact. It's also basically impossible to do any repairs at the user level so you have to get EVERYTHING shipped away, as opposed to with a PC everything can be replaced in house, usually without any special tools even. One way or another, you're only looking at a 1 year warranty. If you build your own your warranty period will also jump significantly, many CPUs, and motherboard manufacturers run lifetime warrantys and for most internal components you'll be getting at least a 2 year, plus the majority of namebrand hardware manufactures have ALOT better service track records then ANYTHING ANY manufacturer puts into their prebuilt boxes.Erom wrote:Depends. You are raging because they can make better computers than you.
The point of a mac is not to keep taking it apart. Particularly with their laptops, the mac is a beautifully engineered, closely built WYSIWYG machine. Example: Macbook Air (lol)

The mobo failed on my father's G5 iMac and the Apple repair shop he mailed it to failed to fix it (and shipped it back saying it was fixed) three times in a row.

What can I say? The concept is there. Perhaps in some cases (or many depending on who you ask), customer service and tech support is not up to par with the systems.

I guess it depends on if your talking laptops or desktops, since nobody makes his own laptop. Building a desktop yourself is really a no brainer, and it would be stupid to do otherwise. For laptops I like the direction apple is taking with the thinner and thinner, and I'm just hoping there's going to be PC:s copying the concept. Ripping out the CD is genius.

The only thing I have been doing with CDs in the last 2 years is booting.

There inlies the problem. Mac's are built for people who see modularity as a chore, not a feature. IE, it's built for stupids. For me the "advantages" it has in ease of use are just frustrating because I don't just want to use the machine within specifications, I want it to do all the things I do with my PC, including swapping out my graphics card and processer every 3 years so I don't have to spend $2000 for a brand new machine when all the parts still work on mine. Although, to be fair, the equivalent parts built into a PC would only cost $1300, only the mac with those parts is $2000.Tribulex wrote:You are raging because they can make better computers than you.

Macs are easy to use if you just buy your mac and never really do anything ever to improve it. But it's hard to find hardware that's compatible for it, it's hard to find software that's compatible for it, it's generally completely unsupported in the freeware community, it's more expensive than an equivalent PC, and it's not upgradeable.
I accept fully that the Mac is a necessary force in the market, but I understand that I fully and totally fall outside the demographic that mac is trying to reach. I'm not so nieve to think that the mac isn't an ideal machine for anyone... but really, any computer hardware enthusiast, gamer, or software developer, even at the hobbiest level, should know know well enough to avoid the mac.
I get my oil changed at Mr. Lube, because I suck at car mechanics, but any self respecting mechanic wouldn't go near that place for fear of execution. Mac is the exact same thing in the computer market.

Oh, but you must at least take time to admire the way the macbooks fit together. Its really fabulous from an engineering standpoint.
