Confused Newbie

Post by Adridar »

Alright, I ran across Spring yesterday, while looking for original TA videos on Youtube, and found some trailer video, which at first I thought was just some video someone had made, and then I realized it was actually a game....so I lost my mind I was so excited :P....found the site, DLed the game, got it setup, spent an hour trying to figure out how to play a game alone against an AI, got into the game, started playing, and then I started noticing a few things.....first thing I noticed, was the reversed mouse buttons, which was annoying, but I can live with it, and I can understand the fact that this is a TA Mod on a 3D engine, so it needs an interface that can work with other game-mods....so I kept on playing, was off building something, and I started getting attacked, which causes panic mode to set in, so I quickly started trying to click on my mini-map and move to where I was getting attacked....but it wouldn't go...I clicked and clicked, right-clicked, left-clicked, thinking "AHHHHH I CAN'T MOVE TO WHERE THE FIGHTING IS!!!!", then I went to zoom out, to scroll there faster, so I whooshed the mouse wheel up!....and I zoomed all the way IN....>_>.....soooo, I sat here banging my head on my keyboard, trying to figure out how to change the settings, but I couldn't find anything.....then there's that giant button on the right-side of the screen, for my vehicle plant that I built, so whenever I try to scroll to the right, my mouse hits it, and it throws up all the unit icons onto my screen, and I have to stop and make it go away >_<.

So, my questions are these:
1. Is it possible to reverse the directions for zooming with the mouse wheel? If so, how :P.
2. Is there a way to click on the mini-map, to change the view to the clicked-on location? or is this the default, non-changeable setting? >_<.
3. How do you turn off the giant buttons for construction buildings that pop up on the right side of the screen?

Thanks! :-).

press f11 and disable buildbar by clicking on the so called listitem

your other points: perhaps buy a new mouse :)

New mouse?....I don't see how that would solve what I'm talking about....when I roll the mouse wheel up, it zooms out, and when rolled down, it zooms in....every game I have ever played, that had a zoom ability, was the opposite of how Spring has it....so I was wanting to know if it can be changed.

springsettings -> expert mode -> scrollwheel speed set to a negative value

Alrighty, thanks a bunch guys! Now I just have to ask....is there any way to replace it, so a different button is used rather than the middle mouse button? cause my middle mouse button is my mouse wheel, which requires quite a bit of pressure to "click" the button....know of any ways to change it? any way to open the settings or something and change it? :P.

You cannot move to a area of the map by clicking on the minimap with the left mouse button because you can select units and give orders on it :) The place of the map you are pointing at is marked by a jewel-looking symbol if you are pointing at an area you are seeing.

Map a different mouse button to your middle mouse click.

I don't think that would work....Yea I can set any of my mouse buttons to be any of the three, but the clicking on the map and changing the view to the selected location, is activated by the Middle Mouse button signal, and I can't make the left or right button do it, cause both are vital to playing....the only thought I could come up with, is making a keyboard button give the "Middle Mouse" button signal, but that would require an option in the settings, or somehow changing that setting in the game's coding >_>....

I believe the 'J' key is by default bound to the same functionality of the middle mouse button.

go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SJ\spring and change MiniMapFullProxy to 0. That will make right button presses move the minimap. This option isn't in SpringSettings for some weird reason.

Note that this'll also make the minimap way less functional. I would just suggest buying a less crappy mouse, really, scroll wheels shouldn't take much pressure to click.

+1 fullproxy is a way better way to play.

Pressing F3 takes you to the point where the most recent event has taken place, be it a point added by an ally, an alert of being attacked, or the error message of a unit not being able to reach its destination.

YESSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!! you guys rock! thank you thank you!!!
Hah, yea, well, aside from the crappy scroll-wheel button, it's a pretty good mouse, but the scroll-wheel button just sucks, sometimes it takes 5-6 clicks for it to send the signal....but then again...it's a Microsoft mouse, so that makes sense :P.

@ZellSF - Thanks for the registry path/info!

@LordMatt - Is there a difference between 1 and +1? cause it was already set for 1, which I'm assuming is the middle mouse button, which causes drastic problems for me, or well, did...problem solved now :P.

@Hamsate - Thanks for the hotkey tip! will come in handy ^_^.

Thanks again!

I'll go ahead and say that I HATE not being able to move somewhere on the mini-map via left or right click.

How many people give orders on the mini-map anyways? :?

Well, I use the minimap purely for navigation. In Photoshop it's even called the 'navigation panel'.

I use it quite often and I'm hardly a pro-player. It's really convenient.

It's too inaccurate for most orders (except maybe moving a ship to a planet in THIS).

I use it sometimes. It's not too inaccurate if you make the minimap bigger.

I think the community should be very attentive to such problems of newbies.
Some might be of laziness which is encounterd in any game, commercial or free but some are important little details that in fact make everything easier or if done in a wrong way make the experiance hellish.
Some of these things are missed cause of the nature of spring being open sourced and totaly dependant on random stuff the official or non official developers feel like doing.
Sometiems the overall picture is missed and things start to feel clumsy and difficult for newbies.
Spring should be intuitive out of the box.
yes we can go on saying that spring community is only for those willing to spend a lot of time figuring out and customizing everything to their desire but I think we all will benefit from as many players as possible so maybe we need to zoom in on the overall smoothness of the experiance for new players.
I think that spring's default options should be as intuitive as possible for a person who plays commercial games.
There is no disadvantage in that as long as spring can be customized fully and changed the way a certain player wants it to be.
Some of it is the lobby's responsibility but some things like right left clicking on the minimap is needed since it is common in other strategy games.
Maybe each of us can look more carfully while playing or thinking about spring where can small changes make a big difference in user friendliness.
Another thing is the oposite mouse button control.
Maybe think,if it is possible,to make an option to chnage that.
Maybe some basic stuff can be asked and rgulated during the installation.
For example, before an instalaton start it could ask shortly whether the player wants the mouse button control be the same as most games and give a few examples or the other way around.
The ai really is a pain in the arse,i agree.
That is however can be improved through the lobby.
