CORE Croc +1

Post by MR.D »

Working from the Cavedog cinema renders, this is what I have so far on the CORE Croc amphibious tank.

*Cavedog renders*
Image

So far its 1046 triangles, but subject to change :-)

There is a twist to the unit though, being that it is a pretty heavy looking tank, I had my doubts that it would be able to traverse mud or loose footing underwater with tracks alone, so I built into it a sealed Impeller system, which will engage once it hits the water.

It will have rotating impeller fans in those ports which will be turning when it goes underwater, but I haven't put them into the model yet.

(just in case you were wondering what those holes on front were for, nope not torpedoes 8) )

So you've planned to have those flaps opening when being underwater for some jet engine? Hmmm - imo the "problem" is you didn't give something like that to the Garpike and the Croc isn't THAT more heavy. Apart from that it might cause some confusions because as regular player you'll only see it in the top down view and they'll ask themselves why the Crocs suddenly look so strange...

Apart from that I think you could invent some things to make the Croc more interesting because imo the current design doesn't have anything really outstanding and is rather boring (for example put something different on it than those boring cylinders)...

mr d, would it be possible for the turret to be encased in a shell while underwater? or would that change the design too much?

@ krogoth... The garpike is a 3rd party unit. Why should a lv1 unit have something advanced like impellers anyway?

LOL @ you guys.

By now I figured that you knew if there was a cavedog render available for the unit, that was what I planned on using to make it.
These models I redo are all based on the OTA design, or at least resemblances of it.

Honestly I like the Cavedog design, because it is ugly and raw looking, something I would expect to come crawling out of the sea or out of a swamp to come kill me.

Its pretty smooth and featureless and flat, just like a fish so it doesn't get tangled in all the BS weeds.

You wouldn't expect an airplane to have huge knobs and greebles on its flight surfaces would you? Of course not.

Tanks don't have to be beautiful, their only job is to kill you btw.

And what his this to do with what I said?

You mean propellers are too advanced for sci-fi units that shoot plasma and lasers out their ass? I mean yeah it's level 1 (-> the Garpike) but we're still talking about futuristic warfare and something like a propeller really isn't something I'd call technical advanced. Apart from that this nice detail is something you won't really see ingame and so imo the ressources should be used for some other details...

BTW @ Mr. D:
In case you want to keep that design there still needs to be some kind of connection to the flaps as currently when opened they have only very little touch to the main body (I think they in fact only are attached to the tank in the middle)...

You also want to do that "ripples" smoth mentioned (although they are on the track parts too) per texture?

I'm still working on it 8)
I'll fiddle around with some parts and try to make it look a little more shaplier, but the general design stays, I'll remove the jewish hat on the turret too or at least find a way to replace it with something better.

The rear port doors I was going to put some kind of vectoring part there, like a fin or something to direct the water jet flow, I'll see if I can build it better into the rear with a hinge or something too.

Maybe if the Beanie was more of a TIE-Fighter Cockpit style window... for the uh... digital consciousness... to look... never mind.

Replace the hat with a pop-out flamer or intimidator.

Ok I made some changes, hope this is better suited to what you guys want.

I still want to put in hollowed tracks, but am concerned about tri count going to high, I'll see if I can work it in.

On the bevels on the track skirts, I'm going to use Alpha to make Vent cuts there just like the Cavedog render, then the tracks will be semi-visible underneath as well.

There is a little bit of work left on the Impeller system to do, then its ready to unwrap.

With only one guy doing the remodeling it will take about 3 years to finish all the units.
