Well... I don't think I'd restrict it to 1 account only... The idea is to make it so you can smurf once in a while if you want, but you can't continuously use smurfing to escape a bad reputation, and thus you can't habitually use it to grief other players.

Det: some users have so many accounts it's difficult for moderators to quickly and easily smurf check. Although, once again, uber server will have more powerful query tools for moderators, as well as user features for ban by IP.

How about no.
Uberserver can track local IP addresses as well. So it's easy to create exception cases for IP addresses that are legitimately shared by many users.

That invites so many problems.. people would haveto request things and there would be even mor echaos and admin harass.
Email is an ok idea,i still think there should be a guest mod and it should be default.
Tracking by ip is a fail idea. The more complicated youl make it all the more people just wont bother..

Welcome to the internets, this is a waste of time. You can't stop people from being stupid.

I'd at least like a feature to track renames.

The server events page on the web interface does this, unfortunately it seems to be down atm.

I think just requiring a unique email per account and email verification would be enough to slow them down considerably.

Also, if we are talking about stupid people, it could be implemented in the lobby - not to allow many account creations per session.

Smurfing is just total fail

Not for the smurf, no he enjoys it when he gets to beat people. But for the rest of the gamers trying to balance a game and then there's a two-stripe smurf of someone who has played +1000hrs and is incredibly talented. Surely the game will be interesting.. no.

This is true, but there is also a problem if you play more mods. I play usually XTA but from time to time, if I want a fast game I play BA or another mod if available. Now, I got a pretty high rank that will ruin the balance because I am not used with the specific mod.

So, if you talk about balance we have 2 problems: having the rank lower than it should be (smurf) and having the rank higher than it should be.

A lot of expert players don't smurf with low ranked accounts. In fact, getting good games with low ranked accounts is much harder than with high ranked ones.

I don't know anyone who does that. People smurf to get a game easier or for anonymity.

It's cool. They don't have to stop, they just have to be abused when they are doing it so they go do it somewhere else.

It's in no sense of word 'cool'. Using IP address to limit account creation will cause nothing but chaos and unnecessary hassle for moderators and players alike. It can also backfire and make the offenders learn how to use proxies with spring, then you'll be in for a real treat.

you'd need the proxy only to login in the lobby, you can proxy the lobby but not spring
