Integrated VOIP Support (Team Based)

Post by mecha »

its probably been mentioned before but its sheer coolness means it deserves another going at. There's plenty of open source platforms we could tie it into. Here's one list I found here

Imagine if we had team channels and a broadcast channel (similar to squadlevel/commander comms in project reality)(I think world in conflict has it too).

Who knows I haven't played for a while so it may have already been incorporated into the svn build :?:

This seriously needs to get done. There is no question about that.

Why is it that devs don't get into it? :?

I think that the lobby is a better place for any voice comm to live. It'd a) allow people to talk in pregame and b) wouldn't require hacking spring to support even more multithreading (all this voice encoding has a cost.)

Licho may be working on something of this sort.

Actually I was talking about what rattle said.

3rd party programs won't make the members in the game be in the same room, 3rd party software won't separate by team.

Joe schmoe has no idea of how to use teamspeak etc, join channels etc etc, if he is even aware that voip software like that existed in the first place.

yeah i believe this is good, as long as there is a mute button

and the voip thing automatically makes all high pitched otnes, not high pitched..

Well, Mumble seems to work okay - how hard would it be to roll into Spring, with the host hosting one room for each team?

Well if Licho is (or was) already working on this, then it's fine. Just that dedicating extra work on this seems superfluos to me because it works fine already.

So about your Joe Schmoe argument... it reminds me of escalators in a fitness center.

In game VOIP = total win

GUI Team side player list with a mute button for specifically muting annoying people = absolutely necessary.

Hope this gets in, it could make coordination and teamwork so much better.

It would be completely awesome to have this interfaced into the game itself, so you could control the VOIP program from ingame, and see who was talking.
