Detail textures

Post by Beherith »

I have some questions about the detail texture, as I am quite bored of springs default one, and I think there are many better ones around.

I think the default detailtex was 256*256, and that looks fine on a decent enough zoom level, but I would like to add some 512 and 1024 width detail textures, and it is possible to add them in the .smd file, and the engine even renders it correctly, but i would like some control over what resolution the detail map is rendered.

At the moment a detail map tile is approximately 6*6 (not exactly 6*6 for some reason...) pixels on the heightmap, I would like to increase this to 8*8 or even 16*16.

Also, is there any way to up the render threshold on it? As it would be nice if I could start rendering it earlier.

Can multiple detail textures be assigned to a map, based on, for example the typemap?

even if you make a larger detail texture, the texture will still be the same sized tile on the map and yeah, I know, that sucks.

changing the way the detail texture works is imo one of the best ways to greatly increase spring's graphical appearance...

if someone writes a mod that can use the detailtexture as a normal map everyone will be jizzin all over the place at those gfx

Anyway, im just plain old sick of springs default detail texture, so I would hereby like to thank the maker of Zeus (Cronos) for his much better one, I have been using it on all my newer high quality textures, cause it adds detail in a very subtle way, not masking out the original texture like the default one does.

you can specify your own detail texture beherith. Look at the map real or was it the rock.. one of those.. it has a large plateau in the middle.

I did use a different detail tex, the one I found in Zeus05 :)
I tried specifying my own, but I found springs limited ability to draw it very hindering, as it was a high detail 1024 detail texture :?
