Grandmaster vs Novice? What seperates a noob from Day? :P

I picked up this link in a discussion about starcraft pro-gaming, and found it a really interesting read.

It's sort of a dissection of the psychology of Grandmaster-rank chess players.

Even the novice engages in effortful study at first, which is why beginners so often improve rapidly in playing golf, say, or in driving a car. But having reached an acceptable performance--for instance, keeping up with one's golf buddies or passing a driver's exam--most people relax. Their performance then becomes automatic and therefore impervious to further improvement. In contrast, experts-in-training keep the lid of their mind's box open all the time, so that they can inspect, criticize and augment its contents and thereby approach the standard set by leaders in their fields.
I feel I have reached that point. I play too relaxed and not enough focused. I play by habits and not thinking openly.

Well one person starts to do that then she losses too rarely to think its playing style needs changes... so start playing with better people :)

I think I still need improvements on my ability to gain territory winhout being vulnerable into doing so, so hopefull that means im not close-minded yet :)

Yes, playing by habit is a problem. If one plays the same maps and mods with similiar player setups all the time, there is a risk to overlearn.

I heard an intresting example of this in signal processing lecture. An artificial neural net was taught to distinguish alphabets. They tried to find an optimum of enough repeats and a diverse enough modelbase for reliable performance while avoiding too much repeats or too narrow base. It could overlearn the models it is thought, and be unable to adapt to variation (spots etc.).

So, people need to stop playing DSD 24/7, and try out some new maps. Trying new mods wouldn't hurt BA skills either. ~~

However playing a lot of diferent TA based mods can get you confused :) Like, since units are all similar you start to not remember well if the mod where this unit did that thing well was this one or that one...
