I read the first page last night and feel that I agrea so far but I am not sure about his stance that it can be changed. These days you quash one troll and another shows up, proxy is used much more and people still have dynamic ips.

That's the beauty of the systems he's proposing. It quite literally is methods of social engineering, as opposed to individually attacking every troll with your moderation team.smoth wrote:I read the first page last night and feel that I agrea so far but I am not sure about his stance that it can be changed. Things like games where teamplay is rewarded on the scoreboard as a method of counteracting killwhoring, or votekick systems that allow both the person proposing the vote to be kicked as well as the person being voted on, preventing the votekicks to be used as a method for greifing (which is almost their only role in most games). I have some ideas for ways of doing it for spring... the forums, there's not much that can be done because we don't have any real control over the structure and features, but there are alot of things we could do to improve the lobby systems. And I'd hope anyways that a more constructive lobby environment would also help make the forums a little nicer.
Ultimately, I need more good forum moderators still :/

Re: Idiocy in Online Games
another relatively related article i found off the front page of Planet Battlefield:
http://www.bit-tech.net/columns/2008/04 ... g_better/1
The vote system of BF2142etc... suffers from the the lack of interaction that is mentioned in the article. Was on a server around 2 weeks ago where someone was abusing the C4 equivalent to get up buildings that are generally out of reach. The votes didn't get high enough to kick and there was no moderator. Finally Fang just joined the guys squad dropped onto the roof and proceeded to grief the guy so that he couldn't do anything (blocked his shots, pushed him off the roof and killed his spawn beacons). Hell i don't even play vanilla BF2 anymore. Rather I play a mod called Project Reality because I like the gameplay more and the mod seems to drawn in a sane and civilized crowd.
Now the BF series of games and so many others that have other people hosting the servers have a much greater issue than something like WoW and other games where all the playable servers are centralized. I mean moderators aren't around all the time, they are volunteers for the most part so ingame systems need to be setup in such a way as to allow players to deal with the black sheep amongst the group. Shadowrun's system sounds interesting although its rather sad that they did all that and then included a tea-bagging achievement.
Two steps forward one step back seems to be the trend...

Re: Idiocy in Online Games
I dunno, tea bagging always seemed pretty legit to me. It's the dance at the end zone of online games- it doesn't interrupt anyone else's ability to play, and in most fps there is actually some risk involved as you have to expose yourself to do it.
It's silly and certainly a little off-color but not griefing imo.

Re: Idiocy in Online Games
In alot of games explosion boosting is considered part of the game. You should check server rules before raging over someone using such "exploits". Alot of servers prioritize fun over realism, especially for a game like BF2142.j5mello wrote:another relatively related article i found off the front page of Planet Battlefield:

Same general thing for teabagging. Sure, it's kinda crude, but virtually no server bans it's use, the reality is it just doesn't really effect the game negatively at all.

What is it? Planting explosives on starting spots or what?

Teabagging? It's running up to a dead player after you've killed them and crouching and standing so it looks like you're humping their head. Basically, it's a victory dance, or a humiliation tactic, but in terms of gameplay, the only thing it does is make you more vulnerable while you're making an ass out of yourself. The idea is kind of crude, sure, but it's not like the player models suddenly grow genitals when someone starts teabagging.manored wrote:What is it? Planting explosives on starting spots or what?
Re: Idiocy in Online Games
Swift i realize that there are servers that allow that but on the one that i was on it was not mentioned IIRC. It's far worse when no one else on the sever can figure it out and as such can't get up and stop the person and there are no admins nor enough people paying attention to kick the guy off the server...
again if there was a reality mod for 2142 ( yeah i know, makes no sense but think about it you'll get what i mean) then i would gladly play that over vanilla 2142. But there isn't and about 85-90% of the servers have FF off which means that its hard for me to find a place where that isn't atleast possible.
I don't mind dying over and over to a skilled player with a sniper rifle thats hidden themselves well on a map (in a normally acessable area) but I hate having to deal with people spamming grenades from inacessable areas or hiding spawn beacons in terrain exploits, espcially since i have enough stuff to worry about like airburst-able frag rockets and LMGs/HMGs that get more accurate the longer you shoot.
Im not saying its rampant but when it happens it ruins the game for me.

Re: Idiocy in Online Games
If it's not mentioned... I would assume it's allowed. Frankly, I find your perspective a bit weird... In TF2 if someone manages to get somewhere they shouldn't everyone's like "hey, cool, how'd you do that?" as opposed to trying to get them banned. I guess I'm not used to playing shooter sims, but meh, game engines are buggy. It's best not to assume something is an exploit unless someone specifically says it's an exploit IMO. Getting on rooftops isn't exactly obscenely overpowered in a game like BF2142, I mean you can always just drop out of a flyer onto a roof anyways.
Re: Idiocy in Online Games
happens a lot more on infantry centric maps where there are no air vehicles...
I guess my point is I play the games looking for getting as close to battle as I can without joining the military. Obviously I would join a clan/tournament to more accurately get the kind of realistically visceral battle experience you see in game intros or trailers (which is what I'm looking for, and yes i realize how unlikely it is that I'll find it) but I don't have the time since i have school and work.
I'm not here to get a high score or any of that. I'm just as happy to guard a cap point and get 2-3 kills in a round or sit and heal/revive/repair teammates. That is why I play Project Reality. While it still has scores the general player base finds it less important than playing as a team towards the goal of capping the points and "winning". Well that and some of the stuff in the game is just too damn cool not to use...

Absolutely I appreciate that, but, personally being a huge FPS fan myself, I couldn't be more oppositej5mello wrote:happens a lot more on infantry centric maps where there are no air vehicles...

As I realize that it's not appropriate for me to go into sim and roleplay servers and whine that I'm not allowed to use exploits, you have to realize that every server out there isn't set up to work the way you like to play either.

OH HI GUYS, [SmuG]Steven here posting from Cebu Philippines, just dropped by to say a few things.
Internet bullying creates internet character, it's a cyber dog eats cyber dog world wide web in the meta internet so one needs internet smarts. And who would give these "noobs" smarts? other noobs? NO, but the trollers and hackers, it is these internet users who teach the newer users what's what and who's who, we shouldn't try to stop this sort of behaviour but encourage it.
I also recommend myself for forum mod.

Re: Idiocy in Online Games
That reasoning applies up until the point where companies start losing money because customers do not enjoy their games' online atmosphere.
Re: Idiocy in Online Games
Key point. It is not your job to toughen us up, it is not your business and frankly it is only one more hassle that we have to bother with. Saying that you are doing it for our own good is just a convenient excuse to act inappropriately. If you want to teach people to deal with internet trolls then you point out the trolling and help people learn to not respond to it. You do not troll them harder until they either leave or somehow through some internal revelation learn to deal with it.
If you wanted to teach someone to fight you do not punch them in the face until they learn. You show them what a punch is and then show them what to do against it and you do it in an encouraging way. Injuries both psychological or/and physical are poor methods of education. These are negative reinforcements, which is what steven is suggesting has been proven to be the worst way to teach behavior.
