Where are the Single Player Missions?

Post by jonjonz »

I get the impression that Spring is really just a platform for wanna be designers to create units, and then call them a mod.

Why are there no single player missions? Is Spring fundamentally flawed in this regards. I have looked at the so called mission builder wiki, and it looks like it just raw scripting, not exactly meant for end users.

There are plenty of threads here about starting work on campaigns, which all seem to piddle out after they decend into flame wars over off topic arguments.

Anyway if some one with skills is looking for a area that is wide open, this is it.

NOTA mod has some missions IIRC.

spring for a long time focused on multiplayer aspect of the game, that's all there is to it. mods are designed to play with (against) other people.

If you'd like to find the various game projects more people to code missions, it would be greatly appreciated, but given that almost all the teams are short-handed in one way or another, most of us have been working on completing the content and main design of the game rather than extras like missions and such. I'm not sure you understand how long it takes to create these games. All of the serious projects have literally thousands of man-hours put into them. Its not like we're messing around with a handful of textfiles and units and saying "hay guys luk I maek game!@!!!"

So unless you have something more constructive to bring than insults for all the people working on games around here, bugger off.

Wow, way to be confrontational.

Yes, Spring is a platform for designers to design games, many of which are played daily by many fans, some of which are played hourly by hundreds.

I personally would love to see missions but it has not been the priority of anyone willing to put in the effort to correct the problems in the engine that make it difficult to make them or correctly document the process of creating them. I tried a couple times and gave up for the same reasons you have, they are poorly documented and lack features essential to make them accessible to the common amateur mission maker.

I personally agree that the lack of Missions (in particular, Tutorial Missions) is a huge glaring sore on our project and it's about time someone stepped up and did something about it.

All we have to work with is raw code -- there are no UI programs for map building, mission creation, or anything of the sort -- those require entirely different programs.

Though, tbh, I'm really pissed nobody's made any apps for development... back in the day, TA had dozens of different utilities, most scratch-built (infact, we're still using some of those same utilities!). All we've got, really, is Upspring...

For me spring is for fun games with other people, not for epic games alone :)

The problem is, nobody really knows the best way of doing it. The mission lua interface is incomplete and terribly outdated compared to Trepans work.

There was a production undergoing for the development a full Campaign. However due to my indefinate absence, due to health concerns I am unable to produce the Campaign. The plans for the Single Player Campaign will be scrapped until I am fit enough to continue writing the files for it.

And please respect my privacy on the health matter, thank you.

We need an accessible, graphical mission builder which can generate scripted activity, place units and confine to map. This requires talents which are otherwise engaged. Most games on the Spring engine are multiplayer-oriented, though the original content teams (S44, Imperial Winter, Gundam, E&E) generally want campaigns and missions but are focusing on the mechanical and artistic aspects which need to be addressed before scenarios, necessary if ultimately inferior to multiplayer, are possible.
