Question to those who played game OTA online

Post by dinamik »

//sorry, my English not good//
Earlier I did not play TA online. Experience is not present.

I and my friend played today TA on the Internet (by IP).
And I have noticed (have paid attention) that my units
move normally, but animation at units of the contender,
It is broken (braking, jerks, etc.) It is not clear.
Why so? Maybe somebody can explane me

thanks

If you are asking about the real TA... I don't know, I never noticed this effect.

I think he's saying he tried the real OTA. It uses different netcode than Spring does, and if it lags, you can see animation issues.

It doesn't sound like he's talking about lag, since he says the units themselves are actually moving normally. I think what he's saying is, "why is animation in OTA so jerky compared to Spring", possibly... He says he "did not play TA earlier" meaning he tried out Spring and decided to see what OTA is like as well. An odd question but pretty normal for Off-Topic.

Also means he's breaking copyright by not owning OTA beforehand, but since virtually everyone else here is a dirty pirate who cares, right?

If so, the reason is that Spring smooths out animation using a special technique called movement interpolation, but in OTA this wasn't necessary because you never see the units up-close. A lot of OTA animation is stored in "frames" basically, not smooth animations. It is a purely visual thing and has no effect on gameplay.

With totala.exe, the bos/cob scripted animation are as smooth in single player than online.

That the Cavedog bos/cob sometimes use move/turn now followed by sleep, and that Spring has thingy to smooth that, is so hard to see in Totala.exe limited resolution that I've never seen it.

It is not the first time dinamik has played Totala.exe. He played offline it for a long time. Then modded it, making WWII reborn, back when TAFanSite was alive.

He does sound like he's talking about lag. With Totala.exe, it is not the orders (move there, attack this, etc..) that are sent, but the position and speed of units. So if you have a bad connection with your online opponent, you see his units jumping around, stacking up in the top left cornder of the map, glow like unbuilt ones, do not die when reaching 0 health, etc... Your unit are entirely handled by your own computer, so are exactly like in single player, so don't show those bugs.

Caydr: lern2read:
- He said his units are normal, while the contender's units not. It does sounds like he's talking about lag.
- He said he hadn't played TA online. On the internet. By IP.
