Spring Site 2

Re: Spring Site 2
unfortunately, content creators are forced to toss their content all over. In one section for art, one THREAD for the entire discussion of their project..
Having a subsection for each project within a general mod discussion area would be prudent. Each mod subsection should have a place for art, story and design that way people are not forced to confine mod discussion to one thread where they can only discuss one item at a time.
PHPBB is a fully featured board, usergroups and subforums are not that hard to do and would help greatly, I have set my forum up as a model for that. However, each time such things are suggested they are outright rejected. IF This site allowed us to better manage the moding sections and art sections MY site could be deleted AND I WOULDN'T MIND!
Ultimately I feel we need:
- Mods(General banter misc)
-- help (a place where users can ask for help)
- mod a(mod a creator is moderator)
-- mod a art
-- mod a design/story
-- mod a hidden forum(for moda group to discuss in private)
- mod b(mod bcreator is moderator)
-- mod b art
-- mod b design/story
-- mod b hidden forum(for modb group to discuss in private)
So at the forum level you would see:
Mods - help
moda - art, design/story, hidden
modb - art, design/story, hidden
This should be at the bottom below mapping and development. MAYBE a mod specific icon to help people quickly spot thier chosen mod.
*edit, and if it is too much work, give me rights to set it up! I don't care, it would be a helluva lot easier then maintaining my site!

Re: Spring Site 2
Smoth if you can register on the forums at newspring.darkstars.co.uk then I will make you admin and you can use it to showcase your proposed forum layout.
However do keep in mind that the contents of that forum are unique to that forum and will not make it into the svn or to the new site when the switch over occurs, and the developers will have to re-arrange the forums themselves assuming they arent happy with the existing arrangements.

Re: Spring Site 2
tonight I am pulling long hours at work. I will try and do it tonight, if not tomorrow night. I can go ahead and quick register but i have to be a bit short in my site visits as I am posting from work right now.
Re: Spring Site 2
AND THEN: we could have the wiki-based game sub-pages, show the most recent activity in that game's sub-forum

Re: Spring Site 2
I'd rather do as much of it as possible on the wiki end then the forums. It's easy to break PHPBB3's privileges and privacy settings accidentally from my experiance.
Re: Spring Site 2
I found it to be easy to manage. What issues have you had?
Re: Spring Site 2
Smoth has the power
Swiftspear, phpbb3 is mysql based and the mysql database is not in the svn. When the site is transferred, the new sites forums will use the same database as the one this post is held in, all the suernames forums will be identical, they'll just be under a different visual style and template.

K, I will work on the stuff as soon as I get home tonight. I have been posting between reading. I really need to focus for the next 5 hours so I will not reply tonight until after I get home and setup the mockup. Until then, see you guys at the same bat-thread same bat forum

No, I mean in context to the hundreds of new forum sections smoth wants to make. It makes a huge ammount more clutter in the admin control panel doing that, and it makes it easy for an admin to accidentally break the privileges or privacies of a certain section.AF wrote:Smoth has the power

Like, right now we currently have 1 spambox forum for dumping flames and crap so we don't delete it and have a backup. But when I put stuff in the spambox I have to go through a dropdown of every forum section on the entire site. It's not a huge problem as right now we only have 15 or so.... but if every mod has their own internal forum section each with 3-4 more internal sections, it clutters up every panel that lists the forum sections IMMENSELY. One of those panels being the user rights and privileges section in the ACP.

Re: Spring Site 2
so whatever happened to making your own forums? if you too many posts in your discussion thread or replies to your art or whatever you should have enough people to start a small forum.

Re: Spring Site 2
Managing a large number of sections and forums isn't THAT bad, I'm the head admin of a forum-based game that has 9 sections and around 100 different forums, most of them with differing permissions, and while it's annoying having to scroll through all of them I've found that it's not terribly difficult to avoid mistakes.
Re: Spring Site 2
It is a matter of having a place to discuss things and users will not have to register. The reason I HAVE my forum is so we have a central place to talk about content development. where we can bounce from subforum to subforum without having to register each time for Xmods OWN forum. There are many mods and it is a CHORE for us to register on each forum.
Programmers job is not to make our lives easier it is to make the user experience easier. Swift, with a little coding, the mod forums could be broken into a separate drop down.
Honestly, having 300+ subforums to scroll through would be a hassle but if you took all the TA based mods, put them under TA then gave that lot it's own dropdown, then you will have less stuff to scroll through.

Re: Spring Site 2
Some finer categorisation that lies somewhere inbetween would be best it seems.

Re: Spring Site 2
well, there has to be a solution. Honestly I do not forsee FGJL becoming an issue.
It is entirely likely that many "mods" will not need their own forum with several subforums. Some of the games will not want several subforums as they have their own already.
