I'm considering a stint in map-making...

Post by FizWizz »

Here's the story:
Way way back in the day I wanted to make maps for OTA. Specifically, Rendered maps. I tried to do it with Terragen, but I got confused at the point where you actually convert the map to OTA. I ultimately gave up and deleted my Terragen stuff in dejection, but I happened to keep pictures of a map thing that I though was pretty slick. Because of the Nature of Spring, I figured it'd be appropriate to give the whole map-making thing another shot. Enough about me though, here's two images I kept and I wanted some input on whether I might be worth anything or not.

Here's the first:
Image
This picture isn't of a map, it's more just an exposition of what I managed to do with Terragen's terrain-type editor-thingie (I don't remember what it's called).

Here's the second:
Image
This is an overhead of the single map I tried to make, I think it's practical and playable. I think it would work well as a 1v1 or 2v2 if I put the start points in the corners.

Anyhow, tell me what you think. I'm not running a poll because I want real feedback. Don't be too harsh!

.... HAWT.

Just make sure some of the flatter areas are easy to build on, and that will be one winner of a map!

Nice! Would be really fun to play on. Only problem, how big is the file size? Cause I imagine it would not compress overly well. Would be interesting to see how well it plays though, Im willing to try.

damn that looks impressive. If you can make that for spring then go for it. I wouldn't worry about the compression. Spring seems to get file sizes down really well without too much distortion.

Perhaps instead of flattening areas on the highlands so that units can maneuvre more easily, put in some treacherous mountain passes (ie: roads) that units have to travel over.

Also, metal patches on the higher regions would make them more strategically important...

Question, how do you add water in spring maps?

Make the terrain lower than the water level.

Sure it looks good, but I can't imagine a game of Spring going over that, unless with a special mod with all building and units having maxslope=89°. Currently, there is simply nowhere on the map to build or move anything. Save maybe a couple shipyard, since the water level is the only thing flat in that map. Which makes me think that ponds should be linked by a ford to make more worthwhile.

whoa whoa whoa whoa... I don't have that map anymore. The only things I have having to do with it are on display on my first post. I deleted everything.
*However,* I did re-install Terragen, and I've been working on trying to recreate a realistic greenworld terrain set. I think I've improved the beaches a little actually, but I haven't worked-in the mountain and snow layers.
After I'm satisfied with my terrain set, I'll have to make a new map from scratch, which is going to take some time, because diligence is not my strong point.
As for the map itself, I wanna call it Fizzy Lakes. It'll be 2 lakes again, and I want to put a lot of thermal around and in the lakes (I don't see why it can't be done, but does anyone know for sure? and how it would look?).
I think that's it for now, I'll get cracking on it and thanks for the support!
