Surprise surprise

Post by CautionToTheWind »

I must say i am very surprised at what happened here. We were playing a team DeltaSiegeDry game. The issue is at minute 35:00, or maybe a couple seconds before. Basically, I have a mix of core tanks (red) under my shield, and there is some allied green levelers on the left side. This is the screenshot where it starts. My units start attacking my ally without me doing anything:

Image

Watching the replay, by selecting and holding shift i can see unit orders. Notice the units actually have attack orders on the allied units, something i couldn't even place on purpose. Some of green's levelers tanks started fighting back at this point, on their own i think. Notice their shots don't get affected by the shield, but they are shooting me.

Image

Here i have noticed something was very wrong (ingame) and ordered my tanks to move:

But the order is canceled on its own after just a couple seconds and they are engaging the levelers again, that keep shooting back. The moho there is an exploiter, and its not engaging the levelers either.

Image

In game i was kinda baffled and i let them sort it out amongst themselves, since ordering them back wasn't working:

After those few units involved died or got tired, everything went back to normal.

Here is the replay:

If you watch it, make sure to watch the end, with 2 Kroggies 1 Commander.

I've had that a couple times, just with reapers iirc.

The pic links don't work.

And that's a nice rebellion there! Adds a touch to the game. :-)

Now, that's bizarre. Never seen that kind of thing, in all the test-games of P.U.R.E.... very weird.

I've seen this before, but I always put it down to units being on fore fire. Now I realise it must be some sort of bug... Have you reported this in http://spring.clan-sy.com/mantis

Were you giving orders to the units in question?

Or really not doing anything at all at the time?

If you were giving orders it may be a worse incarnation of the misclick syndrome, ie. the fact that clicking on a unit to attack sometimes gives an attack ground order if the enemy unit drived away between the time spring decided to make attack the default order for that location, and the time your click was registered. I can imagine that the same thing can lead to your issue if in this timespan the enemy unit drives away and an allied unit drives under the cursor.

If you weren't doing anything at that area of the map at that time with those units however, then I'm clueless as to why it happened.

The fact that they started attacking again after you ordered them to stop, is probably caused by the return fire code (they still had the allied unit "registered" as last attacker, and hence started attacking it again, I think).

I was not giving orders. I was not even looking at them, but i got the warning that my units were under attack. I jumped to the warning position and it took me a little while to realize that i was not going to understand what was going on. My first order to the units was actually to move them away a bit, and then they returned to shoot again on their own.

The simple, fascinating thing here is that they started doing this on their own. I doubt the player controlling the green allied Levelers even noticed anything happened.

This is most definitely real and not caused by human orders, though I have no idea how it happens. A few weeks back in a balance test of simbase all my sams kept randomly going rogue and attacking the ally I was building a base with, and a few of his tanks went rogue at times and attacked my units. Nothing short of moving off of fire at will or a self destruct would stop them permanently, though a manual attack order did work to distract them for a while. It really hurt when bombers came and half my AA had had to be euthanized.
It's probably worth mentioning that these units were also under shields.

Hmm... someone somewhere is not parsing through the units correctly. Under which version(s) has this been encountered? Perhaps something was not updated when the unitlimit changes were made?

It was the leveler, on the living room, with a knife.
