Smoth, re: your hangar, when doing lights, I find it helpful to fake a bit of residual glow around the lit unit. I find it makes for a much more realistic effect (which potentially might run against what you're trying to achieve).
What I do is, I'll paint the light, and then put the light as near-white on the glow map. Then, I grab my brush and put it's opacity very low (~5-10% in PS), and the size of the brush quite large comparative to the light. I'll click once, then reduce the size of my brush, then click again, then reduce the size of my brush, then repeat until I have a nice glow gradient around the light.

It can be quite subtle I think.
I actually first thought to do it when I saw the same technique being utilised on the aeon commander from supcom:

(It's a little more obvious in-game with a lower detail texture. The effect is very nice)
