Actually that's some neat social engineering you've got going on there, Argh.
Sometimes what I'll do is ask a girl to go to something I know she'd absolutely not be interested in... like for instance, go see a hockey game. If she agrees without complaining I'll say, no not really where do you want to go? I can't be bothered messing around with people who are only interested in doing things they like.
Another useful thing is asking about where they work, where they've worked in the past, what they did, why, why not, what they liked about it, what they disliked about it, etc. If a girl hasn't worked a day in her life, she's going to be a pain in the ass. There's something about being an employee for a while that makes you realize, wow, people actually work for a living. If she can't hold down a job for more than a few months, just because she doesn't want to work, that's not a good relationship. I don't care if a girl doesn't work once we're together, she can mess around all day, just as long as she has worked in the past.
Don't just ask them about their friends and family, whenever they mention somebody they don't like, get as much information as you can. If they suddenly explode with all a person's flaws and the evil they've wrought upon the world, they're probably the sort of person who's going to talk about you behind your back. Badmouthing people when they're not around to defend themselves show a lot of immaturity. I don't mind if a person's sort of immature about some stuff, but they should be respectable. If you can't respect someone, you shouldn't even bother with trying to have a relationship.
Make sure before you decide you like a girl that you've seen her with her friends and family. Her behavior during situations when she hasn't been able to brief her friends on what not to say around you can be really, really helpful. ive always been kindof apathetic towards women, ive never pursued one or gone out of my way to be with one. any relationships ive had with them has been because they've pursued me (which i never understood, id say 80% of my free time is spend modding)

So in my opinion, the entire cosmetics industry could disappear and I'd be happier for it. What do you think?
On the other hand, certain things I couldn't live without. If a girl had hairy legs, that would be the end, that's horrendous.
