Having OTA, but no textures anyway

Post by pottn »

OS: Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy)
Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller
Intel Core 2 Duo T7300, 2Ghz

Hi!

I installed Spring based on the instructions on
http://spring.clan-sy.com/wiki/SetupGuide#Build_From_Source

After that installed the Lobbyclient with instructions found on springlobby.info

For testing the game i downlaoded 1 Map and 2 Mods from
http://www.darkstars.co.uk/downloads/index.php?dir=spring

So the current relevant stuff of ls -R is:

ls -R ~/.spring/
<myhome>/.spring/base:
otacontent.sdz spring springcontent.sdz tacontent_v2.sdz tatextures_v062.sdz

<myhome>/.spring/base/spring:
bitmaps.sdz

<myhome>/.spring/maps:
Mars.sd7 paths

<myhome>/.spring/maps/paths:
Mars.1511760202.pe.zip Mars.1511760226.pe2.zip Mars.2573850803.pe.zip Mars.2573850827.pe2.zip

<myhome>/.spring/mods:
TA64.sd7 XTAPEV942.sdz

Starting the game worked fine, got no cursor errors or sth like that mentioned in
http://spring.clan-sy.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=8252

The Map looks like.. uhm a map and wepon fire looks like it should, when building structures the template looks also like it should.

Just all units and buildings are black with lotta colors splattered on - think this shouldnt look this way ;)

So is something missing - and what?

You may be SOL because of your linux os + intel integrated gpu...I suggest you try a different set of drivers (though I'm not sure if there's free / proprietary for intel ones), or try running in wine.

Intel integrated always have this problem, i am afraid at this moment there is no solution, open source drivers for ATI also have this problem, i am afraid a better graphics card is needed.

Oh, yeah - time for a new video card.

I had the same issue on my old one (ati radeon 7500). Strangely enough it ran compiz fine, just couldn't draw textures in spring :|

Hum, as i play this on notebook, it could be difficult to place a new graphics card in there. So there wont be a softwareside solution for this?

How could there be? The software can't fix the fact that the hardware simiply is not designed to run a game like this.

Actually Matt you are wrong, i had a laptop with Intel integrated graphics, windows had spring running fine, but Linux showed a grey map, it is a problem with Linux drivers, and no one wants to believe it.

No, we do know it's a problem with Linux drivers. Phone up ATI and report the bug. It's not Spring's problem, and while spring devs maybe, possibly, I don't know, could make a workaround - it won't be feasible since only a minor proportion of people, on very old hardware, are affected. So it'll be more trouble than it's worth.

Personally I just played with the grey maps. Wasn't too bad at all.

(sorry can't help ya :( )

I include driver in the hardware category. In any case, problem is fixed if you get an nvidia card.

It is a well known problem with drivers and the hardware itself, basically, it's not good enough and doesn't support enough, but it's getting there.
