IIRC fluff wise the Imps basically went, "We need a easy to mass produce tank." Then basically proceeded to kitbash a tank with the TIE cockpit and came up with that...

Although the century tank became famous after Battle of Endor, an early version of the vehicle├óÔé¼ÔÇØthe TIE ap-1├óÔé¼ÔÇØsaw some action during the first years of the Galactic Civil War, where it fought against the Alliance to Restore the Republic.

Either way, IMO the EAW is even uglier than the one we use
