Hurricane from orbit (uberhighes desktop image)

Post by Caydr »

Some of you guys might've seen the fairly recent shot of a hurricane that was taken from orbit. It was a really nice shot, unfortunately it was ruined by there being dust or dirt or something on the lens of the camera. It was also very grainy. I've made adjustments to the original picture, improving the contrast, eliminating the noise, sharpening the edges, and removing the dust.

Here's an idea what the picture looks like:
Image

I've saved the pics as uncompressed JPGs. They're quite large, but they'll look awesome on a large-screen monitor. I've also made a set for HDTVs in case anyone here is running one.

Downloads here:
http://www.aaspring.com/hurricane43.zip (for 4:3 resolutions, such as 1024x768)
http://www.aaspring.com/hurricane54.zip (for 5:4 resolutions, such as 1280x1024)
http://www.aaspring.com/hurricane1610.zip (for 16:10 resolutions such as 1680x1050)
http://www.aaspring.com/hurricane169.zip (for 16:9 resolutions, such as 1080i or 720p)

I've included a variation of the original picture in all the above zips, just a simple effect I thought looked pretty cool.

Also the raw image with no color adjustment or cropping is here. The dust and noise have still been cleaned up:

Any problems you see in this picture were present in the original. Unfortunately in a couple locations you can see where the original photo was stitched together by NASA. I wonder when they'll get that process worked out properly...

The original photo can be found here if you want to do the retouching yourself.

They haven't seen this particular one, since I just personally touched it up to make it far higher quality, and my wife is nowhere near that good looking.

Gifs for heightmaps is probably not the best way of solving the problem of scriptable dynamic terrain. Not that it wouldn't give mappers alot of control, but it wouldn't give the program enough ability to adapt to the animated terrain, especially the pather.

If it counts as weather, the ending to F.E.A.R. has to be the best effect. Alright it's not really weather. But it's environmental kinda....
