Mod Interest Check - BrikWars: Spring

Re: Mod Interest Check - BrikWars: Spring
Okay after reading some bits of it I kinda hate the idea.
B-Tron vs. M-Tron => GOOD
Pirates vs. Confederates => GOOD
SPACE vs. PIRATES => UGH
Anyway to pick up on the space part there was more than just B and M. There also was the new Space Police (1993/94?), old Space Police (90?), old Blacktrons (90?) and they've all got pretty much kickass looking stuff. Also there was the "newer" Ice Planet stuff and a lot more, but most of the newer (95+) LEGOs were failure IMO.
I think that makes enough material for a whole space mod instead of mixing two eras up. Same for the Pirates/Knights/Confederates era.
My 5 cent.

Re: Mod Interest Check - BrikWars: Spring
Just for the record I WHOLEHEARTEDLY SUPPORT THIS IDEA... and while I am entirely useless to you otherwise I always thought making our lego mod a brikwars mod would (when we got something to look at) allow us to absorb the brikwars community...
edit:
Also I think mismatched is the go... Space Stuff VS Other Stuff

Re: Mod Interest Check - BrikWars: Spring
Regardless, check http://www.xenobuzz.com/ out, has a lot of decent custom designs if you need ideas.
Re: Mod Interest Check - BrikWars: Spring
The reasoning behind mixing up to (obviously conflicting) eras is for the sake of silliness/hilarity, which is the entire premise and scheme of Brikwars. Heck, if I could have some sort of "improbability drive" as a superweapon for the Space LEGO faction... where an entire battleship is converted into a bowl of french fries (or, depending on the roll, the attacker's base blows up), I'd do it.rattle wrote:Okay after reading some bits of it I kinda hate the idea.

Take this image, for example. Straight from Brikwars.

THAT'S what I'm talking about. Absurdly absurd violence.
Sticking to a particular franchise (M-Tron vs. B-Tron) just seems kind of boring to me.
Thanks to Rattle, I did a little looking, and it's probably going to be the M-Tron, Blacktron I, and Space Police I for the Space team.
And then there's always the Vikings, Pirates, and (Black) Knights.

I recommend you start learning at least one of modeling, texturing or scripting, (and put your wife on one of the other).

Well I'm trying to learn modeling and scripting now. But I get the message. Sorry to bother you.Zpock wrote:I recommend you start learning at least one of modeling, texturing or scripting, (and put your wife on one of the other).

Ack NO! Please don't get scared away from us just because of a couple jerks!Steppo wrote:But I get the message. Sorry to bother you.
One of the problems with this site in particular is that we have been burned by a lot of people who come in and have all these great ideas (and this is a great idea, even if it does rehash parts of an idea that someone else had) and maybe even had some cool model shots and then suddenly they disappear.
To add insult to injury this happened like 3 times to people trying to create LEGO or Brikwars Mods.
I was trying to help Sheekel with this mod way back in the day but he moved beyond my helpfulness pretty quickly. I would recommend a development cycle as follows:
Come up with all your crazy ideas while making units... when you get 10 units walking around and blowing each other up start thinking about IMPLEMENTING costs and infrastructure and resource systems and other crazy ideas... don't get stuck trying to implement complicated COB/LUA/CEG before you've figured out how to make a unit walk around and shoot.
Re: Mod Interest Check - BrikWars: Spring
Well, on a more positive note... I just got three more modelers.
I won't be keeping updates running here, though. It'll be on the Bluehell Productions forums. There, I'll have tons of resources (sound effects, modelling, texture work) as I know the designers and creators of the A Path Beyond mod for Renegade.
In short, I'm not letting them get me down. I just know that there won't be much in the way of constructive feedback, shy of the handful who are actually somewhat enthused about the completion of a (any?) LEGO mod. For those people, I know where to find you, and you know where to find me.

Re: Mod Interest Check - BrikWars: Spring
A mod like this is going to get a few players but will eventually get shut out by the BA community like all the other small mods, it will be rarely played because most people here are really only interested in spring for OTA. Making the fans of BrikWars or any other lego-fan website aware of the mod (once its playable, looks decent, going somewhere, etc). I think we can expect to get more players from those communities than this one.
Re: Mod Interest Check - BrikWars: Spring
steppo, point of it all is that as the project lead(you are this guy) you need to familiarize yourself with the technologies available to you. You need to understand how all aspects work and idealy, make up for slack when needed. There will be times where all of the artists etc are too busy with reallife and cannot help with your hobby project. At that time you would want to be able to do that part of things.
Specialize, help your wife learn how to make effects, after you show her how to plug them into the bos she could whip out some amazing effects. After she has fooled with effects for a while, there is a good chance she would be familiar enough to help with some lite scripting and so on... to nth level of difficulty.
I do not have any interest in this project but as always my pm box is open if you get really stumped. I do not know everything but i can help with a lot of things. Also don't ask me to do models or effects for you, I have no time to help in that aspect.
Familiarize yourself with the wiki and the stickies we have here on this forum. Register on my forum and read the threads in the bos/cob section as there are good threads on how scripts work. Know that artists are in rare supply so find some that can work with you. Ignore the haters on this site as there are a lot of trolls and frankly most of this community is comprised of assholes.
Have fun, it will be a looooooooong road and a lot of work.

Look, we're half way there!smoth wrote:a lot of work.

Random inspiration from:

Spent a bit of time getting the proper scale for the lego bricks. If all the bricks arent scaled properly it doesnt really look right. Now, 3DO or S3O? thoughts?
Re: Mod Interest Check - BrikWars: Spring
would it be cool to have lego baseplates under the structures, like the factory ground textures in BA only like this:
http://www.kk.org/cooltools/archives/baseplates.jpg
http://www.kk.org/cooltools/archives/baseplates.jpg
Re: Mod Interest Check - BrikWars: Spring
FBI
do not make it larger then your groundplate because it will stretch on slopes.
Code: Select all
UseBuildingGroundDecal=1; //bool to enable.
BuildingGroundDecalType=asphalt.png; // texture name
BuildingGroundDecalSizeX=9; // in footprint size
BuildingGroundDecalSizeY=7; // in footprint size
BuildingGroundDecalDecaySpeed=0.01; //how long it will live after death, this is a fast decay
Re: Mod Interest Check - BrikWars: Spring
If you are going to have maps that have nubs on them already then it will look bad... I would suggest an actual modeled plate that sticks out of the ground a little bit...Sheekel wrote:would it be cool to have lego baseplates under the structures,
If you are going to have normal maps then you could just have the "highlighting" of the nubs so that it makes it look like the baseplate is made from the same material as the map...
the other idea was to have a nub detail texture override the default like Gundam used to do which would make every map look briky...
I'll be really happy if you make the build animation look like the things are being built a piece at a time.
Re: Mod Interest Check - BrikWars: Spring
Actually, you can blow stuff up through unit scripts or Lua, including all enemy units. You can't differ units from buildings without Lua, though. You also can remove a unit and turn into a feature with Lua, i.e. spaceship into french fries.Heck, if I could have some sort of "improbability drive" as a superweapon for the Space LEGO faction... where an entire battleship is converted into a bowl of french fries (or, depending on the roll, the attacker's base blows up), I'd do it.
A little something Gnome dug up.
There's a fuckton of good stuff on on brickshelf as well as peeron for original sets, but you found the latter site. Lugnet.com is another good site.
2x actually in one scentence = baaad

Frenchfry deathray!
Re: Mod Interest Check - BrikWars: Spring
50% chance bowl of petunias
30% chance wale appears above the unit and falls on it for massive damage
15% the target explodes really big
5% chance unit turns into 3 Krogoth like units and an advanced construction unit belonging to your opponent.
