ATI Free Drivers for Spring
Hi,
I'm using the ATI free driver: radeon with an ATI rv350. Spring works but it could be better.
I've got problem with the water, if there is no water on the map, the game will run well, but if there is water, it is slow, really slow...
Another bug: the ground is grey. That's cool five minutes, after it's a bit boring :) .
I would like to do a bug report or a feature request to the radeon developpers, it could work, who knows. The ATI free radeon works fine with the other games I play and I don't want to use the closed driver. Any idea where to find or how to find the info on what cause difficulties in Spring to the free driver ?

I had the same issue with intel integrated 945. Haven't tested this recently though.lejocelyn wrote:Another bug: the ground is grey. That's cool five minutes, after it's a bit boring :) .
If your card is supported I would get the official closed source driver. When i had an ATI 9800 I had this same problem, but the closed source driver fixed those issues. As you have a rv350 card its likely your card is still supported by the official drivers. The free drivers openly state that their 3D acceleration isn't up to the standards of the Official drivers.

Same with me, Intel & Open ATI drivers unfortunatly cannot cut it to make the ground the correct colour for some reason.imbaczek wrote:I had the same issue with intel integrated 945. As suggested ealier used the closed source drivers, only known fix.
I myself am saving up for a new computer because my laptops integrated intel graphics suck. I'm half way now, wooo.

I though Intel didnt have closed source drivers; they open sourced everything?clericvash wrote:Same with me, Intel & Open ATI drivers unfortunatly cannot cut it to make the ground the correct colour for some reason.imbaczek wrote:I had the same issue with intel integrated 945. BTW there was intel patch a few days ago, for g965 that increased performance massively in some games, because they enabled vertex shading (e.g. 2.5 increase in far cry). Don't know if it will help spring.
Re: ATI Free Drivers for Spring
Has anyone else some issues with the Free Drivers ? I got a radeon 9700 and I'm under Ubuntu 7.10 with the free drivers and spring 0.76b1 and the floor appears totaly white with all the maps ... I hadn't this issue with the official ATI drivers and the previous version of spring !
Everything else seems to run just fine yet !
Does it ever happen to someone, is it a known issue ?
thx.

Re: ATI Free Drivers for Spring
If you bother reading the thread you would know everyone has problems with free drivers, i don't mean to sound like a jerk but read the thread.
Re: ATI Free Drivers for Spring
Oups sorry I only flyed over it and haven't seen this issue, and now that i'm reading it more carefully, i see your right !
sorry again !
It seems that the new 6.8.0 driver solves a lot of issue, I hope this one is one of them :)

It always helps to read a bit

Re: ATI Free Drivers for Spring
It runs pretty well here too on r300_dri.so git on an X700 PCIE.
XAA rendermode is very unstable (random crashes) so I use EXA. And I screw up GARTsize a little.
Section "Device"
...
Driver "ati"
Option "GARTSize" "32"
Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
...
In the "driconf" programma, you can put "disable lowimpact fallback" to YES
In spring I turn reflective water off also and adv shading. Sometimes things break, but overall it's been quite stable this way.
I recently clocked up my old p4 20% and it has huge impact on spring performance on r300 probably because of ohter fallbacks.
The r300 driver will see some more improvement over the comming months, since some of the documentation ati released for the 3d core of r500 also applies to r300.

Re: ATI Free Drivers for Spring
I had this issue when running on a Radeon 7500, the open-source "radeon" driver.
However I thought it was just the old card - I because I believe this issue is mentioned in the spring wiki and the guy said just to use a newer card.

Re: ATI Free Drivers for Spring
Ok. It has all gone too far. Ati-drivers package for rv250(radeon 9000 series) and older fails to compile into 2.6 kernel.... So i'm going to develop it all and make radeon's devs to fix problem. But for this i'll need to know wich opengl calls are done when ground textures are rendered....
And PS: Can somebody tell me where can i find people who written that code?
