Guardian update spam...

Post by deadram »

Ok... what's with this guy "Guardian" spaming people on the TASClient about an update that could potentially contain a "fix" to the current battle client (TASClient) to allow him to read your e-mail, grab your website cookies, etc... I think he should be banned from connecting to the server out of spite!

That's not a guy, it's an automated message telling you to upgrade to the latest version of the lobby. If you don't, games will crash or experience unexpected behaviour. The guardian is there for a reason: update. So do it.

If you're worried about spyware I think Betalord can assure you he put up that message himself to ensure everyone would upgrade. But I agree with you that it isn't all that obvious it isn't some malicious program.

Betalord, it would be nice if you care to comment.

No no no.... you don't understand Ded... he's paranoid dilutional and thinks that Java is a virus... Also, you can't tell when he's being sarcastic, heck HE can't tell if he's being sarcastic... frankly I'm surprised he's using the provided .NET client at all...

Java isnt a virus, but it's surprising how many viruses use it as a platform to jump out. Of course the vast majority (99%) of which are dependant on you being thick enough to use IE even though you know about browsers like firefox/mozilla/opera etc...

You are mixing up java and activex, two things that dont have anything in common.

No I'm not, although they dont have ought in common, the vast majority of browser exploits are for Internet explorer. And one of the causes (not THE cause) is java.

no, its not.
Do you have a clue?

edit:
oh wait, maybe you mean java_script_?
That one really is a big problem on IE, but has NOTHING besides 4 letters in the name to do with java.

Or... try blocking the name "Guardian" and any messages recieved by Guardian become a pop-up window, in such a way that no random person, like "Guardien" (notice the e) can start sending off random downloads, and appear legit ;p Putting update messages in like this is... well... scary...

Funny, I never get any viruses, spyware, adware, or any other malware and I exclusively use IE over those slow, cumbersome, and overall crappy browsers. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how to protect yourself from that shit.

I found firefox to be faster than IE, but maybe that's just my system.

I am sorry for the "Guardian", I put it in since the latest lobby crashes when joining a battle and this was the best way of notifying people to upgrade. I posted a message on the forum with link to the fixed 0.12 version, but probably nobody noticed it, especially the new players. It is quite common to see people in #main to complain about their lobby freezing, so I thought this was a way to let people know about it, since SJ didn't think it would be a good time to update client again (on the official site). It was my mistake not to see this problem before puting 0.12 on the web. I've just sent the fixed version to SJ, hopefully he can replace the old 0.12 with this one so that the new players won't have to go through all this. I've also just removed the guardian.

Yah I noticed it.

IE can be secured but it is not the most secure. For example my IE setup is secure enough for me to surf most sites without worrying, but I still miss tabs, and firefox loads faster, and is more secure. Among the fact that spyware and adware is targetted at IE because it's the most widespread browser, and only a minority of malicious software is targetted at other browsers.

Besides What would I do without my google spellchecker, multiple tabbed homepages, nice custom icon toolbar made tiny at the top with search highlighting, that loads pages faster than IE, makes 98% of spyware inneffective, and is standards compliant, among other things and extensions that're available. And I couldnt surf the net without the AdBlock plugin......

And yah I meant Java script.
