The more interesting thing, is for you kids to find out if it counts as a deduction, and particularly... Why?

Well, I would imagine that it would only be deductible if you could get confirmation from her doctor that the procedure was intended as a medical treatment and not an aesthetic surgery.

Technically you're in breach of data protection laws by posting this thread.

I think this backs me up:

http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,, ... 52,00.html

As obesity is listed as a disease , and its an attempt to "meaningfully promote the proper function of the body" by getting rid of an apparently really nasty rash she would be entitled to a tax deduction with additional confirmation from her doctor, I think...

Ding ding ding! Correct :P

Tombom, it's entertainment... Deal with it. Several of us read this email at the same time and uttered a collective "ewwww". But regardless of how disgusting it sounds... it is still a legitimate question. Interestingly enough, even though in actuality it is a cosmetic surgery, if the doctor deems it necessary for whatever reason, she can claim the entire expense as a deduction on her tax return.

As soon as I read it I knew the answer, but I thought that the why was a bit more interesting.

Would it be eligible to count as work expenses if she was working in certain fields?

Not really. That's kind of a long shot at best. Even getting a doctor to label this as "Reconstructive Surgery" Is a bit of a stretch, but believe me, there are a lot of Doctors who will not hesitate.

Along those lines... Interestingly enough, that are many doctors who will label liposuction as reconstructive surgery, for women who have recently given birth.
