spring is killing my laptop

Post by masura »

I've been playing spring for a while now (most of the time SP), the settings are as low as they can go, but the game goes crazy when i build the large automatic cannons. Is this normal?

I know that it's normal that the games slow down when you have alot of units, but when my canon gets destroyed speed goes back to normal ><.

specs:
core 2 duo 2ghz
2 gb ram
ati X1400 <-- pretty crappy, but i can play supreme commander with it so spring shouldn't be a problem

I use ubuntu (not sure if it matters).

As far as that pretty crappy video card goes, it's on the upper range of laptops, the only problem I could see is ATI and a linux operating system. But the fact that you can run Supreme Commander, but Spring doesn't run as well is a very odd coincidence.

I run supreme commander in windows fcourse, and it also slows down when i have alot of units but not so much as spring.

I was playing in speedmetal and building alot (100) of windtowers --> maybe the spinning thin is hard to render. I don't know :), i keep playing but it would be more fun if i could select properly :D.

And also ati and linux --> lot of problems

Spring uses OpenGL as opposed to sup comm which uses DX9. ATI, simply put, is pewp at OpenGL, and mostly pewp at anything remotely lunix related. Unfortunately most likely the problem is the hardware, as depressing as that sounds (since it's all good expensive stuff)

nha ><,

is there a way to freeze unnessesary movements, like those wind mills. Or metal extracters. Unless it's useless :).

I think the ground decals bug might be killing your cpu:

In springsettings, set ground decals to 1 instead of the default 40. Spring should run fine on those specs...

Ground decal bug? I've checked it:
Ground decals = 0

Settings as low as they can go, so the 'ground decals' are automatically set to zero.

Frankly, vulcans on OTA kill my dual core desktop. It's the rate at which they fire that's the issue, so many physics calculations.

* though it has to be said, you need 5 of them to be causing issues on a dual core desktop.

Really? I don't remember it being a problem on my mom's old Celery 500...
