Steam, World of Warcraft, Ventrilo and bandwidth usage.

Post by rcdraco »

I've been wondering this for some time, how much bandwidth on a 16mb/s line will steam take, as opposed to 3 world of warcraft pcs, 2 of those are running Ventrilo/TeamSpeak. I've never gotten around to the actual testing, but I'm trying to narrow down why my game never lags, and they claim that their games are going into the 1,000's of milliseconds in ping, and mine stays right at 50-65ms.

My parents think that steam uses my pc and fast connection as a content server, for peer to peer connection, and everytime I open up the server browser, they say it connects to 12,000 pcs, and that that causes massive lag. They never bring up actual usage graphs, nor any download logs, etc.

My question is, is it really steam that could be causing all of this?

You're parents are full of shit. Steam is not a peer to peer network. It does now however connect to multiple content servers rather than just the one.

shell out $20 (or cheaper) for a hub, connect it to the router and then connect everyone else to the hub. then use wireshark and show everyone that it's not you.

or, if you don't have the $20, run wireshark just on your box.

I think your pentacore celeron uses causes most of the bandwidth.

Vista uses bandwith? Its not even on the fucking list of options. How the fuck does vista use bandwith? More like it lags your system down to point where it seems to be throttling what your potential bandwith could be.

Im sorry. Did you say it uses bandwith to power spyware?

It does. It's generally considered negligible, but I think that's the joke.
