Beginner AI?

Post by FDS »

Are there any beginner AIs that I can download? I would like to learn how to play this game but so far the only AI that I can get to work is a savage beast. x.x
I don't even have time to figure out what does what before theres a massive flood of enemies at my front door. =(

start without any ai, then you should see the "you have won" screen which you can drag out of the focus. after that you can start playing without any fear :)

What mod are you playing? You can easily turn down the settings for AAI, if you post what mod you're using i'll post a config over. Alternatively try turning your handicap up, this will give you more resources to use.

Each AI is unique and usually has a configuration file... you could probably find this configuration file and make it stupid. there used to be a "random enemies" functionality built into the engine which just send increasingly difficult waves of enemies at your start position which was good fun (even if practically unwinnable... you had to ensure that all enemies on the screen were dead at the same time which was difficult with the spawn point constantly pumping them out.)

also sand-boxing it and using some cheats is a good way to go,

.cheat and then use some " .give [amount] <unitName> [team] @x,y,z " commands to give yourself some baddies to blow up.

Two things you can do:

1. Use TestGlobalAI.dll -- This is a blank AI (does nothing). It's an excellent way for you to practice building without any interruption. Better than just starting single player because it won't have a score screen in the way, and you can still kill the commander for fun.

2. Use a larger map! If you use a large map, even the best AI will take a while to find you. If you're just using the default maps you probably find it kills you in no time. Continent based maps (with water) are especially AI resistant, as a lot of AIs don't know how to properly cross the water, significantly reducing the AI's strength.

Beyond exploring the build tree, playing against an AI just teaches you bad habits. If your intent is to play online eventually, i strongly suggest you dont play against AI's. Learn the build tree and basic economy and orders then jump straight into a game- just make sure that the players know you are a noob.

If you want to just play it entirely against AI's though, thats fine.

For BA/CA though, try this:
2 Metal Extractors
1 Solar Panel
1 Light Laser Tower
1 Metal Extractor
1 Solar Panel
1 Vehicle Plant

Put the vehicle plant on flash tank x2 construction vehicle x1 and turn repeat on. Give your commander a 'guard' order on the factory, and when you run out of energy (the yellow bar goes down) make more solar panels.

Use your constructors to expand with metal extractors and light laser towers to protect the metal extractors. Use the flash tanks to guard your constructors and to raid the enemy.

Congratulations you now know how to play. Its really all you need to know, and its often all a lot of very skilled players will make during a game (Though they might throw in a radar).

You should watch some good players play 1v1s, and you'll get an idea of how people play this game.

while good advice for someone who has played for a couple of weeks, this is terrible advice for a brand new player

no one can get used to the UI or giving orders without playing the game

Well obviously you'll have to practice doing it yourself too.

Thanks you all for the help!
I need to get back to getting killed cause I suck at this game, & I can't build in 20 different places at once like the AI. ='(

Altough the ais are insanely fast they are very stupid and always do the same thing, you just need to learn how they play and you will be able to beat em easly. Example: Try to porc (fortify your base like hell and make metal maker ai instead of mex taking), go up to tech 2, make a nuke and nuke the ai. As far as I know ais dont make antinukes...

I agree that playing against the ai doesnt really teaches how to play the game, but it can be fun to try to use creativity to win over larger numbers... (because, like I said, Ais dont think and will always try to defend thenselfes in the same way)

He was giving a not-so-subtle hint to people to work on one. We don't have any campaigns right now unless you count TA itself.

+1 to anyone who can even release a good tutorial scenario for a mod... all you need is... ok I think I'm going to need to make a new topic.

One is still in it's planning stages. Developers have already been assigned. The that is being used is CA. However this will take some time, and I won't be available on spring for a while. My ISP is screwing with my connection, I have high latency and very low downstream (wtf?) I've checked and I have been 2k ping.

Imma switch the filters tonight and physically check the cables, then call up my ISP for a line test.

Hopefully the King will be back.
