Videos, and the really obvious things that arent done

Post by AF »

Ok people keep putting up videos and there're allsorts of things that should be obvious and simple todo but people never do them:
  • A wmv file on a rapidshare or megaupload site is not a hosted video. For every 100 users that see it, only one or two will be arsed downloading and playing a 20MB wmv. You're also locking out some people who cant play those formats.
  • No youtube videos available - For every 100 people who try to view your video, the vast majority will not bother if they can't view it there and then in their browser via something like youtube. Youtube is the most effective means of advertising spring via videos at the moment.
  • Putting videos and animated art and media in the mods and general discussions forums - Art goes in the art forum silly, not the general forum
  • Sometimes videos are put up and you dont know what they are till you see them. This is annoying, especially when the only way of viewing it is by downloading a 20MB video, and these files can sometimes by in excess of 100MB at full resolution! Are you trying to put people off watching your video?!?!?!
  • Dodgy video codecs, explains itself

  • Get VLC and stop whining about WMV. Videos only get hosted as WMV because people are using microsoft movie maker to edit clips. If they had an editing suit capable of exporting better formats they wouldn't be using MSMM in the first place
  • I agree... but if we're specifically talking about randy's vid, it would be unwatchable with the youtube file quality degradation. It really depends on the video weather youtube is a reasonable option or not.
  • Gameplay video's and Showcases aren't really "art"... What cabbage does is a little borderline, but since we conceivably could use it as an advertisement reel we'll forgive him for putting it in a place where more people will see it.
  • Threads about videos tend to contain comments on what the video is about... I agree, people could be more descriptive, but you can't really trust a video author to tell you how good their video is anyways, of course they think it's good.
  • No one knows anything about codecs.

stop whining about WMV.
Get the ffdshow codec (part of any better codec pack such as CCCP) and VirtualDub. Both free. Besides, you can use the latter to crop (use crop option on resize filter, but enable codec safe steps) your video for much increased quality. Removing audio decreases the file size even more. I use MPEG4 XviD and a constant bitrate of 1800 kbps. Fair enough quality and a rather low file size.

First, VLC is great, but not everyone has it, not everyone can be arsed with it either. And some people dont just use the plain wmv mpeg4 or divx/xvid codecs, they end up choosing wierd codecs which need big codec packs to be played by most programs.

As for describing a video, I can think of many ways to describe a video that do not involve me saying 'its good bad ugly fugly great', "A trailer for P.U.R.E", "Showcase of BA", etc, perfectly fine, "Good video" or "Bad video" are useless descriptions, and if you cant think of a description of a video then what was the point of the video? Any half decent video is about something or has a purpose.

And how is video not art? I'm sure that most schools and universities with video orientated courses are hitting their heads against their computer monitors right now after reading that =p

That and youtube is the quickmans way of finding out if the video is about monster robots or explicit goatse porn.

I would just like to point out that the "Art & Modeling" forum is under the category "Game and mod creation", and that videos, thought art, are not part of game or mod creation.

Yeah better move this to off-topic as it isn't about spring either.

I would safely assume that posting to YouTube despite the craptastic quality is worthwhile... you could even link to the nice version in the notes.

vlc has ass ugly subtitle renderer

something nice would be for top tier players to do commentaries for particularly interesting or exciting games... would probably be very valuable for newbies and spark interest in outsiders

That sounds fun... actually, we could have faceoff commentaries, with four guys sitting around a table at the bottom of the video, talking about the game with different, obvious, biases.

+1 this would be so awesome! I really like listening to these kind of stuff. Can also make one with comments on anothers game as well, or one's own.

You gotta love "shoutcasted" (read: commentated) CNC3 replays then.

Perhaps one could make a gadget/widget which tries to play an mp3 with the same name of the replay from the demo folder if it finds anything.

I really love to watch a good game commented. Frankly, I could care less if it helps newbs, it gives an incredibly amount of insight into a game hearing what top players think of a high skill match.

Hell, even just sitting arguing with det in some sak vs randomassortedPROplayer match is some of the most fun I've ever had in spring.
