Got a job a year ago, now I feel genuinely dumber. Anyone else get this? I mean, I have difficulty pronouncing words properly - probably because I don't talk a lot and I'm getting out of practice - , and I'm actually having trouble making sentences make proper sense the first time around. I have to proofread my posts for the first time since I was like 12. Getting back into AA has been a 2-month process... try to figure things out again, give up, wait a week, repeat. With this short vacation I'm getting back into it finally but it's been a real effort and just now, after a full week, I'm feeling like my old self again. I'm starting to get back that over-arcing vision of what I want things to be like, whereas for the last week I've been mainly sifting through my notes and making changes I'd planned on over the last 12 months.
Anyone else had a similar experience? If not I've gotta get the air tested at my workstation or something...

Re: Work make you dumb?
Work in a machine shop, run a machine all day. Sometimes do work with my hands, deburring finished parts etc... Generally there's not much social interaction, and I don't get on the computer much anymore, so that would probably explain some of the problem.

Re: Work make you dumb?
It doesn't really make you dumber, but your brain gears down for stuff you don't use alot. IE, you can get straight A's in calculus and know it in and out, but if you don't use it for 3-4 years and someone asks you even a basic question you'll probably need to go back to some references to figure it out. It's not that you're dumber, or you've simply forgotten what you've learned... chances are going though a class again would just bore you because you'd be up to spec so fast, it's just that your calculus parts of your brain have rusted up a bit.
Re: Work make you dumb?
Man, this job is making me dumb for anything that isn't specifically related to the job. Because this involves talking to people and writing notes that are coherent it has actually heightened those skills. But I have noticed that even though talking it OK, talking about anything non-technical is pretty difficult, and creative things are a lot harder to focus on.

I noticed same thing, work totally kills braincells o_O
When i was working, i didnt have much time to think things, it was just working, sleeping, working, sleeping ... sucks. Being a zombie.
Now i havent been working for month or so, and i start feeling like more functional...
Maybe some programming job wouldnt "kill" your braincells so easily? i should try it some day.
