(CREATING THE WORLD WHEN YOUR PLAYING FIRST TIME MIGHT TAKE A WHILE(1-15 MINS DEPENDING ON YOUR HARDWARE SETUP), THIS IS BECAUSE THE GAME IS ACTUALLY CREATING A _WORLD_ WITH CONTINENTS AND SEAS FOR YOU TO PLAY IN, SO BE PATIENT,YOULL ONLY NEED TO DO THIS ONCE.)

DWARF FORTRESS IS A ROGUELIKE GAME WITH 2 MODES OF PLAY, ILL FOCUS ON THE ONE I THINK IS FUNNIER IN THIS POST.
Dwarf Fortress is a gamefeaturing two modes of play, a distinct, randomly-generated world (complete with terrain, wildlife and legends), gruesome combat mechanics and vicious hordes of elephants.

THIS GAME FOCUSES ON DWARVES TRYING TO BUILD UP A FORTRESS INSIDE A MOUNTAIN. INITIALLY YOULL HAVE 7 DWARVES TO BEGIN WITH AND YOU GET TO SUIT THEM WITH NECESSARY ITEMS BEFORE EMBARKING.

Image
(A screen showing up one of the 3 pages of tasks/professions the dwarves can perform.)

THE GAME ITSELF HAS MANY AWESOME ELEMENTS MAKING IT FEEL LIKE A REAL WORLD. THE DWARVES ARE EACH UNIQUE, HAVING FEARS AND DREAMS AND OWN PSYCHOLOGIES

THERE IS ENGINEERING, YOU CAN BUILD TRAPS AND BRIDGES AND EVEN STEAM-WEAPON OR TORTURE CHAMBERS >:D

THE GAME IS REALLY HARD AT FIRST , FIRST TIME I PLAYED I HAD TO ASK A FRIEND WHERE THE MOUNTAIN WAS(LOL). BUT AFTER THE INITIAL ASCII SHOCK YOULL FIND THAT THIS GAME IS PURE AND ACTUALLY _EASY_ TO PLAY DESPITE THE COMPEXITY OF THE ENGINE

Image
(building up some furniture)

AND IF THIS WASNT ENOUGH AWESOME FOR A SINGLE GAME, YOU CAN PLAY A ADVENTURE MODE, TAKING UP A SINGLE DWARF TO WANDER AROUND THE WORLD, YOU CAN EVEN VISIT CITIES YOU'VE BUILT ON YOUR PREVIOUS GAMES! SOME WHICH ARE WORKING AND SOME. . . WHICH DIDNT END WELL AND HAVE BECOME INHABITED BY ORCS AND OTHER FILTH, TRAPS, BUILT BY YOUR ANCESTORS MIGHT BE ON EVERY STEP ON THESE FORTRESSES.

Image
(A wrestling match against a cyclop is not going well. . . )

THERE IS A THIRD MODE TOO WHICH FOCUSES ON YOUR DWARVES GOING ON A RECLAMATION JOURNEY TO GET SOME ANCESTORIAL FORTRESS YOU'VE BUILT ON A PREVIOUS GAME BACK FROM THE HOLDS OF GOBLINS AND OTHER MONSTERS.

FIGHTING BOTH HUNGER, THE WILDLIFE OUTSIDE, THE MONSTERS INSIDE AND THEMSELVES, BUILDING UP A FORTRESS IS NOT AN EASY TASK.

IF YOU ARE HAVING TROUBLES OR ANYTHING, YOU CAN PM ME ON THE LOBBY, NICK IS [WarC]Sleksa , I'VE ALSO MADE UP A CHANNEL CALLED #DF IN THE LOBBY, COME THERE IF YOU GOT QUESTIONS OR NEED HELP AND ILL TRY TO ANSWER <3
Yah More who play :o . Yeah love this game but im incredibly unlucky at it. Every game my tapper gets eaten by cougar then other silly dwarfs run to ravage him and get eaten as well. My newcomers stepped into the land then all took a dive into the lake (for what reason i dont know) but yeah that was makes the game fun. :P

I think I'm starting with too much equipment, in too easy settings - I haven't lost a fortress yet.

Oh, I lose an odd dwarf here and there to goblins or giant eagles, but it seems really hard to actually have a fortress collapse.

Start on top of a goblin fortress, or start in haunted/sinister swamp areas

otherwise you could also try some challenges, like hermit challenge.

Hermit

* No skills
* One pick and no other supplies

A well known and popular challenge. Kill off the 6 starting dwarves and any immigrants as they arrive, and try to make a living for the last dwarf.
This game mode can be very challenging ;>

In fact there are certain areas where setting a fortress up is very easy (I was lucky to fall on one straigh on). However surviving the globin sieges that will come might be not so easy :) Luckly I can produce everthing I need from inside it so if I fortify well enough they will never get me :)

By the way, anyone else noticed the immense similarity between the mitology of this game and that of lord of the rings, mainly in what concern dwarves?

I think that whoever force who made the child act strangely and then go insane and then depressed tried again, as one of my dwarves got "possessed" and locked himself in the metalsmith forge with a metal bar, and is working in a "strange object". I remember of hearing that this is how artifacts are born, but what is the use of a artifact?

Maybe you could pick a spot near a dragon... not sure how to ensure it's presence when you start however.

How do you get necrophiliac dwarves? Actually, I don't want to know.

never got that far, the stupid Dwarfs kept trying to steal his kill... I might try to reclaim the site in the future if I get better enough at the game.

Dig a hole in the ground, stuff your dwarves in, make a plumpt helmet farm there and you will never have to come back to the surface where wild animals eat you again! :) (Except to gather wood, but then you can gather the trees next to your hole and anyway in future versions they will add a kind of tree that can be planted underground)

I think it is high time we start thinking of a goal for a Spring Forum succession game.

I've played with high towers, deep underground gardens with lakes, statues, zoo... But this forum is so full of twisted ppl that i'm sure we can come up with something better.

Yeah, the broken seiges kind of remove the challenge aside from evil locations, I've kind of stopped playing till those get fixed.

Dragons and other megabeasts , IIRC, dont do anything but stay in a small zone and dance around only following things that amuse him/her, like rabits or dorfs. This friendly misunderstanding turns into a violent dorf-ocaust.

I wonder if i should start playing DF... if it can get 21 pages in the forum it must be good! also it will be something to do while i'm banned. Is there any kind of beginers tutorial guide around? I already have it installed and everything.
