My desktop is messy and boring. I have about 100-200 icons on a plain black surface (goes up and down constantly, like a digital tide), with a lonely taskbar at the bottom of my 1600 / 1200 flatpanel. I hate wasting time navigating, I hate wasting CPU on drawing stuff I'm only going to ooh and ahh at once, and I'm mouse-oriented, so I just put it all where I need it.
I've tried pretty backgrounds, and they just get in the way- if you're going to do that, why not just not have any icons at all? That seems completely pointless to me, since zipping around my desktop is a lot faster than navigating a menu or remembering which recursive directory I put everything in...
I'm just weird like that, I guess. It's the same reasoning behind why I generally refuse to use "chat" programs- in the time it takes to "chat" about something, I could have 4 much-more-useful phone conversations, or write one really nice, formal email, or one-and-a-half decent Forum entries (er, "walls of text", for you non-readers). It annoys me to no end that people intentionally waste their time like that, and worse yet, want me to join them. Next, they'll be asking me to "text" with teeny buttons on my cell phone, which is even more retarded

I (and Satirik I guess) like your desktop philosophy :)Argh wrote:
