could spring go into this http://www.boundlessplanet.com it has huge spherical worlds and so i've heard is going open source soon
Boundless Planet is indeed going open source soon after the community asked it from Justin the dev. He acknowledged he was the bottle neck now Zander had joined Pixar and the community was becoming increasingly frustrated. Now he is married im sure it will be more right lol.
Initially Justin plans the client to be released and tbh there is enough work to do to bring this up to standards. I'm no coder I'll be honest but we are all hoping a small number of talents may have been waiting for such an opportunity.
We have theorised faction client or addons and multiple world clients but its very dependant on information from boss man about how his system runs. Imo he is cleaning up lots of redundant and embarrassing code atm and probably redoing part or all of the security. He didn't start this year with this in his plans but whilst he is hard to discuss with at points- he typically responds with something the community wants and here we are.
As to the ins and outs - I think Treeform understood more than most of us players and can possibly explain what options seem open to Justin. We are baying in the forum but to no avail atm i feel as we don't look as good as his new missus

I think he was asking for HUGE maps and persistence not multiplayer.
And re into this I think he possibly meant could the coders take a port on board to Boundless Planet or something when it goes open source. just a guess but you know, kinda easy to do
A site with some files and pics? Boundless Planet? Its a 3D MMORTS - which imo kicks the arse of a pretty RTS) made by two young guys as a hobby. They ran it at their own cost for two years on beta before Gold release and its still a kick arse game. Most gamers inability to handle 24/7 persistent MMORTS is something that's hindered it for sure, whereas drop in and out RTS resembles UT2004 and Q4 etc for gameplay and copies an already successful model.
And going open source with an already made MMORTS to stop a bottleneck for the community is a brave and revolutionary step in MMO imo. I would have hoped for support from a game community which has many more coders n modellers assisting it. Would you hand over something so carefully made and created so easy? Bravo Justin!

I do not think I am going to bother with a response to that needless to say that I do give away code but I digress the point is that I wanted to know why we should care, how it relates to spring etc.
and yeah it is just a site with pics, it has no real info for me to know what the hell I am looking at. That is why I have no idea what I am looking at.

Unless im mistaken Boundless Planet is older than this mod of TA and was coded from scratch by Justin himself. a search of the forum will reveal and posts about the engine involved.
As to the sites relevance here.. you may be on an island but most aren't. I'm quite shocked you don't appear to know anything about the genre - heard of Mankind either? time of defiance? A from scratch coded MMORTS is going open source for the players benefit and you flick it off? I'm shocked at such lack of generosity or respect for a coder tbh. Why did you post in this thread at all if your not interested? Original post was a good one - how can an established open source RTS assist/take advantage of a rare occurrence?
As to the information - you have one coder - just married - notoriously hrd to communicate with who will obviously be struggling to prepare code for release and patch holes and all th e things coders can easily imagine they would have to do at this time. And you expect him alone ot prepare documents for you in advance - even though its being pointed out he was caught by surprise by this and made a choice - a good one we hope.
We - the Vets of BP - are doing our best to help spread the word and get players and coverage for BP agaisnt huge competition by established houses and You just grunt and use a % of your brain to reply to a thread you say you have no interest in? Shame..
You don't offer advice or suggestions how we could help him prepare. You don't wish him or the community and coders who may be interested in seeing what's compatible luck? No links from your great and generous experience? Just the effort to deride a project?
Anyway ... Shame the thread wasn't allowed to develop to the point where I ask you for such advice or interest without such tone but c'est la vie. Im sure open source fans can imagine how this will progress and more but we Vets are all in the dark bar Treeform. He is a touch cynical lol (just a TOUCH!!!) so I was hoping for some goodwill n goodlinks.
In return I'll hurry with review and more links for Spring on http://www.mmortsgamers.com .

vimes, if your presumptuous banter is typical of your ilk then I have no desire to wish you or your kind any well being. Good to know that the cranial rectitus that inflicts you is so severe that you merely pass me off as nothing of any substance.
To be honest, I think the idea of a mmorts that one needs to play for 24/7 is asinine and frankly only for people who have no life. Sure it is neat the guy wrote some code and is giving it away. Frankly It doesn't effect me and is not something I care about.
btw, this highlights why calling our pakages in spring mods is an idiotic concept. I want to take this opportunity to tell the community I TOLD YOU SO.
Also VIMES, I just want you to know that I have met halo fanboys with a clearer vision of reality then you have. Seriously, I do not expect your time here to last past a year and frankly will not care either way. I am proud that I have no fans of anything I do because I know eventually your ilk would come my way.
of couse I know you will not read this as your reading comprehension of all of my prior communication fell at 4th grade level.

forgive me - I thought it developed from TA before going it alone so too speak.
Regardless- the point stands. Boundless Planet was started in 2002 I believe - certainly when I joined the beta in 2005 it was heard it had been going 2-3 years alpha. The domain was bought in 2002 also.
So It developed OFF TA then a framework was made so it could stand alone. And many mods still require TA - even the core one shipped with Spring? Just so I get this right lolGames are played using one of a number of mods. The prepackaged mod that comes with the standard installation, XTA, requires that one own a copy of TA to legally play it, as do most mods based on TA. There is, however, an official release which uses fully free content, and there are also a number of mods available for download which may be used free of charge without owning a copy of TA.

The Wikipedia article has been in need of a complete revision for years now, I haven't replaced it yet because I haven't the time to do so.
There are a number of content packages on the engine which utilize OTA content, but they do not require the actual Total Annihilation game (Save for legal reasons) and they are, frankly, not among the quality titles which should represent this engine.
Gundam, E&E, 1944, Nanoblobs, PURE, SWS and many other titles are free of OTA content.

None of the easy to find documentation here states a timeline and the wiki entry seemed clear enough to me. Id also check all the review sites your posted on as the impression they give lead to my conclusion.
Fanboy lol - not worth the effort - at least if your gonna insult me then try harder and put some class into it. Then expect a reply.
When you go to a commercial game site you get roughly the same info on the game - if you actually bother to read the help files and forum you get more. If you even dare play the game the ingame tutorial gives you more. Then you can goto the community site and learn some good shit. Thats if you have any common sense. If Boundless Planet was a collaberative effort with all you guys and gals then it may need explaining to the nth. Given two guys made all that and released it and it works is a big achievement. This is a collective effort by many more and you haven't achieved so much yet so don't get shirty or arrogant ffs.
As I also explained- and you showed yourself to be trolling for fun not seriously reading - Justin is alone now and in a real life change. He has decided to go open source to satisfy the community's need for more work and content. How can this not be worth mentioning nevermind READING!!
You haven't even mentioned what kind of documentation you were looking for lol. There are plenty of descriptions and review of the game - lots of files and forum posts. Are you so blind even 11 year olds can find this but you cant?
Did you do all this by yourself? or two of you? No. Simple. Im quite shocked at the surly teen like attitudes here to a good bit of news and a interesting thread which you have hijacked to show off how good your small mapped multiplayer game is. Sorry but i played UMS on a 286 up to starcraft and C&C and im RTS'd out. Its dull even against a good foe. No longevity - no structure for progression. Never will i return to multiplayer limited games.
So your really not impressing me here.
