Have you seen the opening vid for DoW (original) though?

At the end of that the drop pods use thrusters as they come in so the landing isn't as heavy.

Retro rockets or not, anybody under it is dead. It's just a matter of whether they're a little grease spot or charcoaled. :P

drop pods would be very useful for inantry type units, especially if one co0uld develope a way to allow a unit (droppod) to be built with specific units inside it (squad). something ive sought to be useful for a mod i was planning out on paper, and im sure other mods could benefit aswell. although i could image possible engine barriers to coding it so... yeah...

drop pods like quake wars strogg turrets? That would be intresting, heavy scripting, but probably velocity code and all that would be no use, if youve played QW, they fall out of the sky and SHOOOOMMM THUD! (full impact), that would be cool, but hard
