Team Fortress 2

Post by Comp1337 »

Bought the orange box yesterday after seeing the PCG review (94%) and have been playing TF2 since, and all i can say is that this is one of the best onlinegames ive ever played. Not only that, the orange box is going for $45 srsly it would be a crime not to buy it

^The graphics are top-class

If anyone else bought it, what are your impressions?

Haven't played it, watched my brother play it though.

I always refer to backstabs as "surprise buttsecks".

I've had it for about a week now, its great. At only $45 (~£20) its a bargain even if you already have Half Life 2 and Episode 1.

*clears throat*

Ahem, bare with me here, I'm about to go into a massive rant :

Team fortress 2.... something that some of us waited 10 years to see.

Sadly, the end result is something that is NOTHING like the team fortress we've all grown to love except in 3 things : the weapons, the classes and the name.

It is a completely different game that feels more like DoD repackaged instead of Team Fortress.

The game, in my opinion, suffers from Bioshockititis. That is, it is a highly polished game, graphically pleasing, tons of neat little touches from taunts to voices.

But.

It suffers from a huge lack of depth.

The game has been dumbed down a LOT, the only "skill" remaining in the game is that of your generic FPS - Aim & reflexes. All you can do is "kill kill kill kill kill". Nothing else. Except for rocket jumping and pipejumping - but they're not as practical as in TF(C).

Some people might scream : " OMG IT HAS DEPTH! STRATEGY! MAPS!".

This is nothing unique - just about every FPS out there is the same from that angle.

"But.. but.. it has teamplay!111"

It only has TEAMPLAY because the game is SCREAMING TEAMPLAY, TEAMPLAY at you - the actual teamplay in a pub isn't any more or less than in any other FPS.

Infact, how do you define teamplay? is it a medic piggybacking on you? people helping you shoot other people? if you said yes to those two - every FPS has such elements of teamplay.

Most TF veterans got sour at this game but in my opinion, all in all aside, it's not a bad game - it's a decent game that can be enjoyable.

It just lacks many of what made TFC so great : The many tricks / side-skills, grenades ("omg rofl grenade spam" is not an excuse - spam is the same in TF2, replace grenades w/ Demoman grenades and Soldier Rockets), the highly customizable map systems that allowed for crazy innovation - see murderball, sc5x, axlfly and moar.

It also added a few elements of extreme frustration such as :

Critical hits - this is like valve throwing a dice on behalf of you, if you win the roll, you get to kill your opponent in 1 shot or at least deal MASSIVE damage to him. Very annoying, very random and extremely bad concept IMO.

Zero-reaction-time sentry gun : Nuff said.

They're god damn monsters now. Now replace sentry with 12 sentries in one point just to see how unbalanced and crazy it gets.

The maps in TF2 aren't bad, but half of the CP_ maps are a bit poor IMO - well and granary spring to mind.

TC_Hydro is a cool concept but a very poorly executed one - most passages are literally the same and only two of them are open at once - if the map had a larger scale, more "unique" feeling random-passages, it would beat the shit out of everyone's classic 2Fort.

/end rant

tl;dr version :

Good :

Shiny graphics.
Very, very, very easy to play.

Bad :

Critical hits.
Lack of depth.
Some maps are poorly executed.

Oh and my stats :

(I share accts with relative/hellcom :P - 95% of those stats are mine - the 5% is probably the heavy :P)

TF2 doesnt fucking work on my new PC. I get a looping sound crash error after a few mins of playing (first few mins or fine then when it crashes I am forced to hard reboot with reset button).

Seems many others have same issue. Some shitty problem with the useage of Paged Pool virtual memory by the source engine which is more than XP allocates. Naturally I tried changing the PagedPoolSize in regedit as suggested on steam support forums but all that achieved was to infect CS:S and my other source games with the same problem, all of which had been running perfectly fine before.

Then I spent 12 hours trying to fix it yesterday and in the end the only solution was a complete reformat/reinstall of windows all over again. :/

Ahh, this was going to be my contribution to the thread.

Though for what little i've played of it, it's enjoyable thus far.

Start your source games with -dxlevel 81 and the lockups will be gone.

I still didn't get to play it yet. It looks like it will be funny and a nice light-hearted game to play.

Do I enter the -dxlevel 81 into the Launch options box?

Yes Jimmy, Launch options box. That doesnt work for me though. Another suggested solution is to go to start/run/dxdiag then go to sound tab and set hardware acceleration to basic.

And for some seemingly random reason, if you have support for foreign languages installed on windows, including thai etc it takes a lot less PagedPool to run TF2.

I'm gonna download it again tonight and probably try if it works again tomorrow after classes, but theres no way I'm going to try to fix it again if it doesnt.

Thats because they fixed the PagePool problem for foreign language setups :D A fix for the rest of us is on the way.

I'm a little surprised that the dxlevel-thing didn't work for you, it seemed to be the omnipotent anti-lockup solution. :/
