FORTRESS FOREVER

Post by hunterw »

tf2 has its work cut out for it...

fortress forever is a free 3rd-party half-life2 mod. if you've played any of the old team fortress games, you know what's in store.

it's really top quality. the movement and gameplay overall are very similar to tfc - i think it will completely convert its playerbase.

so can it compete with tf2? i think that with a few patches over some really annoying bugs (long ass loadtime, 10% chance the round will not keep track of anyone's frags, fix fix fix fixxxxxxxx) then it will be on square footing in terms of quality. i'll play both with an open mind, but i <3 tfc so it will be hard to pull me away from ff.

I haven't had much time with TFF, but from the few minutes that I have played its a fantastic mod. Its kinda shame that both TF2 and TFF are coming out so close to each other, particularly when their gameplay is fundamentally the same afaik. The only major difference that I can infer at this point is the art design for TF2, particularly with its cel-shaded character models.

In the end I think both should be able to have their own user bases. However, that said the orange box offers such great value that the cost barrier that would normally benefit something like TFF might not exist to the extent it normally would.

In the end it comes down to whether TF2 can live up to its hype, as always with big game releases, and if TFF can offer an experience that can compete.

tf2's gameplay is supposedly a huge departure from the rest of the series

we will have to wait and see

anyone who says TF2 is the same as FF, except for the look & feel is a moron.

TF2 :

No grenades.
Respawn times.
Most classes lost a weapon or two.
Medic was gimped to a 100% support role.
Seems.... slow.

To me, TF2 looks as if it was Xbox'd / CS-ified.

FF is fairly true to TFC, it has made many, many beneficial changes IMO.

Just look at the FF spy or pyro.

I'll still try TF2 though.

If Cup buys Orange box or TF2 that is :[.

I'm considering getting the Orange Box and then grabbing FF.

I haven't bothered with FF yet, I never really got into TFC so the appeal for both TF2 and FF are a little less pressing for me.

Orange box is a definite buyer, but that's more because I can't wait for portal than because TF2 is something I am interested in.
